Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job

וַ֭יַּעַן

way·ya·‘an

אֱלִיפַ֥ז

’ĕ·lî·p̄az

הַֽתֵּמָנִ֗י

hat·tê·mā·nî,

､ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

way·yō·mar.

and said ､

､ הַלְאֵ֥ל

hal·’êl

can to God ､

יִסְכָּן־

yis·kān-

גָּ֑בֶר

gā·ḇer;

כִּֽי־

kî-

יִסְכֹּ֖ן

yis·kōn

may be profitable

עָלֵ֣ימוֹ

‘ā·lê·mōw

. מַשְׂכִּֽיל׃

maś·kîl.

he who is wise .

הַחֵ֣פֶץ

ha·ḥê·p̄eṣ

[is it] any pleasure

､ לְ֭שַׁדַּי

lə·šad·day

to the Almighty ､

כִּ֣י

kî

؟ תִצְדָּ֑ק

ṯiṣ·dāq;

you are righteous ؟

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

Or [is it]

בֶּ֝֗צַע

be·ṣa‘,

כִּֽי־

kî-

תַתֵּ֥ם

ṯat·têm

you make blameless

؟ דְּרָכֶֽיךָ׃

də·rā·ḵe·ḵā.

הֲֽ֭מִיִּרְאָ֣תְךָ

hă·mî·yir·’ā·ṯə·ḵā

is it because of your fear of Him

יֹכִיחֶ֑ךָ

yō·ḵî·ḥe·ḵā;

that He corrects you

יָב֥וֹא

yā·ḇō·w

עִ֝מְּךָ֗

‘im·mə·ḵā,

with you

؟ בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃

bam·miš·pāṭ.

into judgment ؟

הֲלֹ֣א

hă·lō

[Is] not

רָעָֽתְךָ֣

rā·‘ā·ṯə·ḵā

your wickedness

؟ רַבָּ֑ה

rab·bāh;

וְאֵֽין־

wə·’ên-

קֵ֝֗ץ

qêṣ,

؟ לַעֲוֺנֹתֶֽיךָ׃

la·‘ă·wō·nō·ṯe·ḵā.

your iniquity ؟

כִּֽי־

kî-

תַחְבֹּ֣ל

ṯaḥ·bōl

you have taken pledges from

אַחֶ֣יךָ

’a·ḥe·ḵā

､ חִנָּ֑ם

ḥin·nām;

for no reason ､

וּבִגְדֵ֖י

ū·ḇiḡ·ḏê

and of their clothing

עֲרוּמִּ֣ים

‘ă·rūm·mîm

. תַּפְשִֽׁיט׃

tap̄·šîṭ.

לֹא־

lō-

Not

מַ֭יִם

ma·yim

עָיֵ֣ף

‘ā·yêp̄

､ תַּשְׁקֶ֑ה

taš·qeh;

You have given to drink ､

וּ֝מֵרָעֵ֗ב

ū·mê·rā·‘êḇ,

and from the hungry

תִּֽמְנַֽע־

tim·na‘-

you have withheld

. לָֽחֶם׃

lā·ḥem.

､ וְאִ֣ישׁ

wə·’îš

But the man ､

זְ֭רוֹעַ

zə·rō·w·a‘

ל֣וֹ

lōw

– הָאָ֑רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ;

the land –

וּנְשׂ֥וּא

ū·nə·śū

and the man

פָ֝נִ֗ים

p̄ā·nîm,

יֵ֣שֶׁב

yê·šeḇ

. בָּֽהּ׃

bāh.

in it .

אַ֭לְמָנוֹת

’al·mā·nō·wṯ

שִׁלַּ֣חְתָּ

šil·laḥ·tā

You have sent away

､ רֵיקָ֑ם

rê·qām;

וּזְרֹע֖וֹת

ū·zə·rō·‘ō·wṯ

and the strength

יְתֹמִ֣ים

yə·ṯō·mîm

of the fatherless

. יְדֻכָּֽא׃

yə·ḏuk·kā.

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּ֭ן

kên

סְבִיבוֹתֶ֣יךָ

sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯe·ḵā

פַחִ֑ים

p̄a·ḥîm;

וִֽ֝יבַהֶלְךָ

wî·ḇa·hel·ḵā

and troubles you

פַּ֣חַד

pa·ḥaḏ

. פִּתְאֹֽם׃

piṯ·’ōm.

אוֹ־

’ōw-

Or

､ חֹ֥שֶׁךְ

ḥō·šeḵ

לֹֽא־

lō-

– תִרְאֶ֑ה

ṯir·’eh;

[so that] you see –

וְֽשִׁפְעַת־

wə·šip̄·‘aṯ-

and an abundance

מַ֥יִם

ma·yim

. תְּכַסֶּֽךָּ׃

tə·ḵas·se·kā.

הֲ‍ֽלֹא־

hălō-

Is not

אֱ֭לוֹהַּ

’ĕ·lō·w·ah

גֹּ֣בַהּ

gō·ḇah

in the height

؟ שָׁמָ֑יִם

šā·mā·yim;

of heaven ؟

וּרְאֵ֤ה

ū·rə·’êh

and see

רֹ֖אשׁ

rōš

､ כּוֹכָבִ֣ים

kō·w·ḵā·ḇîm

כִּי־

kî-

! רָֽמּוּ׃

rām·mū.

lofty they are !

､ וְֽ֭אָמַרְתָּ

wə·’ā·mar·tā

and you say ､

מַה־

mah-

؟ יָּ֣דַֽע

yā·ḏa‘

אֵ֑ל

’êl;

הַבְעַ֖ד

haḇ·‘aḏ

עֲרָפֶ֣ל

‘ă·rā·p̄el

the deep darkness

؟ יִשְׁפּֽוֹט׃

yiš·pō·wṭ.

He judge ؟

עָבִ֣ים

‘ā·ḇîm

סֵֽתֶר־

sê·ṯer-

ל֭וֹ

lōw

– וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

so that cannot –

יִרְאֶ֑ה

yir·’eh;

He see

וְח֥וּג

wə·ḥūḡ

and [above] the circle

שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם

ma·yim,

. יִתְהַלָּֽךְ׃

yiṯ·hal·lāḵ.

He walks .

הַאֹ֣רַח

ha·’ō·raḥ

Will to the way

עוֹלָ֣ם

‘ō·w·lām

תִּשְׁמֹ֑ר

tiš·mōr;

אֲשֶׁ֖ר

’ă·šer

؟ דָּרְכ֣וּ

dā·rə·ḵū

מְתֵי־

mə·ṯê-

. אָֽוֶן׃

’ā·wen.

אֲשֶֽׁר־

’ă·šer-

קֻמְּט֥וּ

qum·mə·ṭū

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

and

､ עֵ֑ת

‘êṯ;

before their time ､

؟ נָ֝הָ֗ר

nā·hār,

by a river ؟

יוּצַ֥ק

yū·ṣaq

were swept away

. יְסוֹדָֽם׃

yə·sō·w·ḏām.

Whose foundations .

הָאֹמְרִ֣ים

hā·’ō·mə·rîm

､ לָ֭אֵל

lā·’êl

to God ､

ס֣וּר

sūr

מִמֶּ֑נּוּ

mim·men·nū;

וּמַה־

ū·mah-

and what

יִּפְעַ֖ל

yip̄·‘al

can do

שַׁדַּ֣י

šad·day

. לָֽמוֹ׃

lā·mōw.

to them .

וְה֤וּא

wə·hū

And yet He

מִלֵּ֣א

mil·lê

בָתֵּיהֶ֣ם

ḇāt·tê·hem

ט֑וֹב

ṭō·wḇ;

with good [things]

וַעֲצַ֥ת

wa·‘ă·ṣaṯ

but the counsel

רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים

rə·šā·‘îm,

of the wicked

רָ֣חֲקָה

rā·ḥă·qāh

is far

. מֶֽנִּי׃

men·nî.

from me .

יִרְא֣וּ

yir·’ū

See [it]

צַדִּיקִ֣ים

ṣad·dî·qîm

､ וְיִשְׂמָ֑חוּ

wə·yiś·mā·ḥū;

and are glad ､

וְ֝נָקִ֗י

wə·nā·qî,

and the innocent

יִלְעַג־

yil·‘aḡ-

. לָֽמוֹ׃

lā·mōw.

at them .

אִם־

’im-

לֹ֣א

lō

not

､ נִכְחַ֣ד

niḵ·ḥaḏ

are cut down ､

קִימָ֑נוּ

qî·mā·nū;

our adversaries

וְ֝יִתְרָ֗ם

wə·yiṯ·rām,

and their remnant

אָ֣כְלָה

’ā·ḵə·lāh

. אֵֽשׁ׃

’êš.

the fire .

הַסְכֶּן־

has·ken-

Acquaint yourself

נָ֣א

nā

עִמּ֑וֹ

‘im·mōw;

with Him

– וּשְׁלם‪‬

ū·šə·lm

and be at peace –

בָּ֝הֶ֗ם

bā·hem,

תְּֽבוֹאַתְךָ֥

tə·ḇō·w·’aṯ·ḵā

will come to you

. טוֹבָֽה׃

ṭō·w·ḇāh.

､ קַח־

qaḥ-

､ נָ֣א

nā

､ מִפִּ֣יו

mip·pîw

from His mouth ､

תּוֹרָ֑ה

tō·w·rāh;

וְשִׂ֥ים

wə·śîm

and lay up

אֲ֝מָרָ֗יו

’ă·mā·rāw,

. בִּלְבָבֶֽךָ׃

bil·ḇā·ḇe·ḵā.

in your heart .

אִם־

’im-

If

תָּשׁ֣וּב

tā·šūḇ

עַד־

‘a·ḏō·ša-

to

､ שַׁ֭דַּי

day

the Almighty ､

､ תִּבָּנֶ֑ה

tib·bā·neh;

you will be built up ､

תַּרְחִ֥יק

tar·ḥîq

You will remove

עַ֝וְלָ֗ה

‘aw·lāh,

. מֵאָהֳלֶֽךָ׃

mê·’ā·ho·le·ḵā.

far from your tents .

וְשִׁית־

wə·šîṯ-

Then you will lay

עַל־

‘al-

in

､ עָפָ֥ר

‘ā·p̄ār

and the dust ､

בָּ֑צֶר

bā·ṣer;

וּבְצ֖וּר

ū·ḇə·ṣūr

and among the stones

נְחָלִ֣ים

nə·ḥā·lîm

and the brooks

. אוֹפִֽיר׃

’ō·w·p̄îr.

the [gold] of Ophir .

וְהָיָ֣ה

wə·hā·yāh

and Yes will be

שַׁדַּ֣י

šad·day

､ בְּצָרֶ֑יךָ

bə·ṣā·re·ḵā;

וְכֶ֖סֶף

wə·ḵe·sep̄

תּוֹעָפ֣וֹת

tō·w·‘ā·p̄ō·wṯ

. לָֽךְ׃

lāḵ.

כִּי־

kî-

אָ֭ז

’āz

עַל־

‘al-

in

､ שַׁדַּ֣י

šad·day

the Almighty ､

תִּתְעַנָּ֑ג

tiṯ·‘an·nāḡ;

you will have your delight

וְתִשָּׂ֖א

wə·ṯiś·śā

and lift up

אֶל־

’el-

to

אֱל֣וֹהַּ

’ĕ·lō·w·ah

. פָּנֶֽיךָ׃

pā·ne·ḵā.

תַּעְתִּ֣יר

ta‘·tîr

You will make your prayer

אֵ֭לָיו

’ê·lāw

to Him

וְיִשְׁמָעֶ֑ךָּ

wə·yiš·mā·‘e·kā;

and He will hear you

וּנְדָרֶ֥יךָ

ū·nə·ḏā·re·ḵā

. תְשַׁלֵּֽם׃

ṯə·šal·lêm.

you will pay .

וְֽתִגְזַר־

wə·ṯiḡ·zar-

And You will utter

､ א֭וֹמֶר

’ō·w·mer

וְיָ֣קָם

wə·yā·qām

and it will be established

לָ֑ךְ

lāḵ;

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

so on

דְּ֝רָכֶ֗יךָ

də·rā·ḵe·ḵā,

נָ֣גַֽהּ

nā·ḡah

will shine

. אֽוֹר׃

’ō·wr.

כִּֽי־

kî-

､ הִ֭שְׁפִּילוּ

hiš·pî·lū

they cast [you] down ､

､ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

and you say ､

– גֵּוָ֑ה

gê·wāh;

Exaltation [will come] –

וְשַׁ֖ח

wə·šaḥ

and the humble [person]

עֵינַ֣יִם

‘ê·na·yim

. יוֹשִֽׁעַ׃

yō·wō·ši·a‘.

He will save .

יְֽמַלֵּ֥ט‪‬

yə·mal·lêṭ

He will [even] deliver

אִֽי־

’î-

[one who is] not

､ נָקִ֑י

nā·qî;

וְ֝נִמְלַ֗ט

wə·nim·laṭ,

and Yes he will be delivered

בְּבֹ֣ר

bə·ḇōr

by the purity

. כַּפֶּֽיךָ׃

kap·pe·ḵā.

of your hands .
