Job Affirms his Integrity

וַיֹּ֣סֶף

way·yō·sep̄

אִ֭יּוֹב

’î·yō·wḇ

שְׂאֵ֥ת

śə·’êṯ

､ מְשָׁל֗וֹ

mə·šā·lōw,

his discourse ､

､ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

way·yō·mar.

and said ､

､ חַי־

ḥay-

[As] lives ､

אֵ֭ל

’êl

הֵסִ֣יר

hê·sîr

[who] has taken away

– מִשְׁפָּטִ֑י

miš·pā·ṭî;

my justice –

､ וְ֝שַׁדַּ֗י

wə·šad·day,

and the Almighty ､

הֵמַ֥ר

hê·mar

[who] has made bitter

– נַפְשִֽׁי׃

nap̄·šî.

my soul –

כִּֽי־

kî-

כָל־

ḵāl

ע֣וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

as long as

נִשְׁמָתִ֣י

niš·mā·ṯî

and my breath [is]

בִ֑י

ḇî;

in me

וְר֖וּחַ

wə·rū·aḥ

and the breath

אֱל֣וֹהַּ

’ĕ·lō·w·ah

of God

– בְּאַפִּֽי׃

bə·’ap·pî.

in my nostrils –

אִם־

’im-

not

תְּדַבֵּ֣רְנָה

tə·ḏab·bê·rə·nāh

will speak

שְׂפָתַ֣י

śə·p̄ā·ṯay

､ עַוְלָ֑ה

‘aw·lāh;

וּ֝לְשׁוֹנִ֗י

ū·lə·šō·w·nî,

and my tongue

אִם־

’im-

יֶהְגֶּ֥ה

yeh·geh

. רְמִיָּֽה׃

rə·mî·yāh.

חָלִ֣ילָה

ḥā·lî·lāh

Far be it from me

לִּי֮

lî

to

אִם־

’im-

אַצְדִּ֪יק

’aṣ·dîq

I should say are right

אֶ֫תְכֶ֥ם

’eṯ·ḵem

עַד־

‘aḏ-

אֶגְוָ֑ע

’eḡ·wā‘;

לֹא־

lō-

not

אָסִ֖יר

’ā·sîr

I will put away

תֻּמָּתִ֣י

tum·mā·ṯî

. מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

mim·men·nî.

from me .

בְּצִדְקָתִ֣י

bə·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯî

My righteousness

､ הֶ֭חֱזַקְתִּי

he·ḥĕ·zaq·tî

I hold fast ､

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

– אַרְפֶּ֑הָ

’ar·pe·hā;

will let it go –

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

יֶחֱרַ֥ף

ye·ḥĕ·rap̄

shall reproach [me]

לְ֝בָבִ֗י

lə·ḇā·ḇî,

. מִיָּמָֽי׃

mî·yā·māy.

as long as I live .

The State of the Godless

יְהִ֣י

yə·hî

May be

､ כְ֭רָשָׁע

ḵə·rā·šā‘

like the wicked ､

אֹ֣יְבִ֑י

’ō·yə·ḇî;

וּמִתְקוֹמְמִ֥י

ū·miṯ·qō·wm·mî

and he who rises up against me

. כְעַוָּֽל׃

ḵə·‘aw·wāl.

like the unrighteous .

כִּ֤י

kî

מַה־

mah-

what [is]

תִּקְוַ֣ת

tiq·waṯ

the hope

､ חָ֭נֵף

ḥā·nêp̄

of the hypocrite ､

כִּ֣י

kî

､ יִבְצָ֑ע

yiḇ·ṣā‘;

he may gain [much] ､

כִּ֤י

kî

if

יֵ֖שֶׁל

yê·šel

אֱל֣וֹהַּ

’ĕ·lō·w·ah

؟ נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃

nap̄·šōw.

הַֽ֭צַעֲקָתוֹ

ha·ṣa·‘ă·qā·ṯōw

יִשְׁמַ֥ע ׀

yiš·ma‘

will hear

אֵ֑ל

’êl;

כִּֽי־

kî-

תָב֖וֹא

ṯā·ḇō·w

עָלָ֣יו

‘ā·lāw

. צָרָֽה׃

ṣā·rāh.

אִם־

’im-

-

עַל־

‘al-

in

؟ שַׁדַּ֥י

šad·day

The Almighty ؟

יִתְעַנָּ֑ג

yiṯ·‘an·nāḡ;

will he delight himself

יִקְרָ֖א

yiq·rā

will he call on

؟ אֱל֣וֹהַּ

’ĕ·lō·w·ah

God ؟

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

. עֵֽת׃

‘êṯ.

אוֹרֶ֣ה

’ō·w·reh

I will teach

אֶתְכֶ֣ם

’eṯ·ḵem

בְּיַד־

bə·yaḏ-

– אֵ֑ל

’êl;

of God –

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

what [is]

עִם־

‘i·mō·ša-

with

שַׁ֝דַּ֗י

day,

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. אֲכַחֵֽד׃

’ă·ḵa·ḥêḏ.

I will conceal .

､ הֵן־

hên-

אַתֶּ֣ם

’at·tem

כֻּלְּכֶ֣ם

kul·lə·ḵem

חֲזִיתֶ֑ם

ḥă·zî·ṯem;

וְלָמָּה־

wə·lām·māh-

and why

זֶּ֝֗ה

zeh,

[is] this [that]

הֶ֣בֶל

he·ḇel

؟ תֶּהְבָּֽלוּ׃

teh·bā·lū.

you behave with complete nonsense ؟

זֶ֤ה ׀

zeh

this [is]

חֵֽלֶק־

ḥê·leq-

אָדָ֖ם

’ā·ḏām

of a man

רָשָׁ֥ע ׀

rā·šā‘

עִם־

‘im-

with

､ אֵ֑ל

’êl;

God ､

וְֽנַחֲלַ֥ת

wə·na·ḥă·laṯ

and the heritage

､ עָ֝רִיצִ֗ים

‘ā·rî·ṣîm,

of oppressors ､

מִשַּׁדַּ֥י

miš·šad·day

from the Almighty

. יִקָּֽחוּ׃

yiq·qā·ḥū.

אִם־

’im-

If

､ יִרְבּ֣וּ

yir·bū

are multiplied ､

בָנָ֣יו

ḇā·nāw

לְמוֹ־

lə·mōw-

[it is] for

– חָ֑רֶב

ḥā·reḇ;

the sword –

וְ֝צֶאֱצָאָ֗יו

wə·ṣe·’ĕ·ṣā·’āw,

and his offspring

לֹ֣א

lō

not

יִשְׂבְּעוּ־

yiś·bə·‘ū-

shall be satisfied

. לָֽחֶם׃

lā·ḥem.

with bread .

[שרידו]

śə·rî·ḏōw

-

(שְׂ֭רִידָיו)

rî·ḏāw

Those who survive him

､ בַּמָּ֣וֶת

bam·mā·weṯ

in death ､

יִקָּבֵ֑רוּ

yiq·qā·ḇê·rū;

shall be buried

וְ֝אַלְמְנֹתָ֗יו

wə·’al·mə·nō·ṯāw,

and their widows

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. תִבְכֶּֽינָה׃

ṯiḇ·ke·nāh.

אִם־

’im-

יִצְבֹּ֣ר

yiṣ·bōr

he heaps up

､ כֶּעָפָ֣ר

ke·‘ā·p̄ār

כָּ֑סֶף

kā·sep̄;

– וְ֝כַחֹ֗מֶר

wə·ḵa·ḥō·mer,

and like clay –

יָכִ֥ין

yā·ḵîn

. מַלְבּֽוּשׁ׃

mal·būš.

יָ֭כִין

yā·ḵîn

He may pile [it] up

וְצַדִּ֣יק

wə·ṣad·dîq

but the just

､ יִלְבָּ֑שׁ

yil·bāš;

will wear [it] ､

וְ֝כֶ֗סֶף

wə·ḵe·sep̄,

and the silver

נָקִ֥י

nā·qî

. יַחֲלֹֽק׃

ya·ḥă·lōq.

will divide .

בָּנָ֣ה

bā·nāh

､ כָעָ֣שׁ

ḵā·‘āš

like a moth ､

בֵּית֑וֹ

bê·ṯōw;

וּ֝כְסֻכָּ֗ה

ū·ḵə·suk·kāh,

and Like a booth

עָשָׂ֥ה

‘ā·śāh

. נֹצֵֽר׃

nō·ṣêr.

עָשִׁ֣יר

‘ā·šîr

､ יִ֭שְׁכַּב

yiš·kaḇ

will lie down ､

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

but not

– יֵאָסֵ֑ף

yê·’ā·sêp̄;

be gathered [up] –

､ עֵינָ֖יו

‘ê·nāw

פָּקַ֣ח

pā·qaḥ

. וְאֵינֶֽנּוּ׃

wə·’ê·nen·nū.

and he [is] no more .

תַּשִּׂיגֵ֣הוּ

taś·śî·ḡê·hū

､ כַ֭מַּיִם

ḵam·ma·yim

like a flood ､

בַּלָּה֑וֹת

bal·lā·hō·wṯ;

לַ֝֗יְלָה

lay·lāh,

in the night

גְּנָבַ֥תּוּ

gə·nā·ḇat·tū

steals him away

. סוּפָֽה׃

sū·p̄āh.

､ יִשָּׂאֵ֣הוּ

yiś·śā·’ê·hū

Carries him away ､

קָדִ֣ים

qā·ḏîm

､ וְיֵלַ֑ךְ

wə·yê·laḵ;

and he is gone ､

וִֽ֝ישָׂעֲרֵ֗הוּ

wî·śā·‘ă·rê·hū,

. מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃

mim·mə·qō·mōw.

out of his place .

וְיַשְׁלֵ֣ךְ

wə·yaš·lêḵ

And it hurls

עָ֭לָיו

‘ā·lāw

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

– יַחְמֹ֑ל

yaḥ·mōl;

מִ֝יָּד֗וֹ

mî·yā·ḏōw,

בָּר֥וֹחַ

bā·rō·w·aḥ

. יִבְרָֽח׃

yiḇ·rāḥ.

He flees .

יִשְׂפֹּ֣ק

yiś·pōq

[Men] shall clap

עָלֵ֣ימוֹ

‘ā·lê·mōw

at him

כַפֵּ֑ימוֹ

ḵap·pê·mōw;

וְיִשְׁרֹ֥ק

wə·yiš·rōq

עָ֝לָ֗יו

‘ā·lāw,

. מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃

mim·mə·qō·mōw.

out of his place .
