Elihu Confirms God's Justice

וַיַּ֥עַן

way·ya·‘an

And further answered

אֱלִיה֗וּא

’ĕ·lî·hū,

､ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

way·yō·mar.

and said ､

שִׁמְע֣וּ

šim·‘ū

חֲכָמִ֣ים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm

､ מִלָּ֑י

mil·lāy;

my words ､

וְ֝יֹדְעִ֗ים

wə·yō·ḏə·‘îm,

and you who have knowledge

הַאֲזִ֥ינוּ

ha·’ă·zî·nū

. לִֽי׃

lî.

to me .

כִּי־

kî-

אֹ֭זֶן

’ō·zen

the ear

､ מִלִּ֣ין

mil·lîn

תִּבְחָ֑ן

tiḇ·ḥān;

וְ֝חֵ֗ךְ

wə·ḥêḵ,

and as the palate

יִטְעַ֥ם

yiṭ·‘am

. לֶאֱכֹֽל׃

le·’ĕ·ḵōl.

– מִשְׁפָּ֥ט

miš·pāṭ

נִבְחֲרָה־

niḇ·ḥă·rāh-

לָּ֑נוּ

lā·nū;

נֵדְעָ֖ה

nê·ḏə·‘āh

בֵינֵ֣ינוּ

ḇê·nê·nū

among ourselves

מַה־

mah-

what [is]

. טּֽוֹב׃

ṭō·wḇ.

כִּֽי־

kî-

､ אָ֭מַר

’ā·mar

אִיּ֣וֹב

’î·yō·wḇ

､ צָדַ֑קְתִּי

ṣā·ḏaq·tî;

I am righteous ､

וְ֝אֵ֗ל

wə·’êl,

but God

הֵסִ֥יר

hê·sîr

. מִשְׁפָּטִֽי׃

miš·pā·ṭî.

עַל־

‘al-

؟ מִשְׁפָּטִ֥י

miš·pā·ṭî

my right ؟

אֲכַזֵּ֑ב

’ă·ḵaz·zêḇ;

אָנ֖וּשׁ

’ā·nūš

חִצִּ֣י

ḥiṣ·ṣî

בְלִי־

ḇə·lî-

[though I am] without

. פָֽשַׁע׃

p̄ā·ša‘.

transgression .

מִי־

mî-

Who [is]

גֶ֥בֶר

ḡe·ḇer

､ כְּאִיּ֑וֹב

kə·’î·yō·wḇ;

יִֽשְׁתֶּה־

yiš·teh-

לַּ֥עַג

la·‘aḡ

؟ כַּמָּֽיִם׃

kam·mā·yim.

וְאָרַ֣ח

wə·’ā·raḥ

לְ֭חֶבְרָה

lə·ḥeḇ·rāh

עִם־

‘im-

with

פֹּ֣עֲלֵי

pō·‘ă·lê

､ אָ֑וֶן

’ā·wen;

of iniquity ､

וְ֝לָלֶ֗כֶת

wə·lā·le·ḵeṯ,

עִם־

‘im-

with

אַנְשֵׁי־

’an·šê-

. רֶֽשַׁע׃

re·ša‘.

כִּֽי־

kî-

､ אָ֭מַר

’ā·mar

he has said ､

לֹ֣א

lō

יִסְכָּן־

yis·kān-

גָּ֑בֶר

gā·ḇer;

בִּ֝רְצֹת֗וֹ

bir·ṣō·ṯōw,

that he should delight

עִם־

‘im-

in

. אֱלֹהִֽים׃

’ĕ·lō·hîm.

לָכֵ֤ן ׀

lā·ḵên

אַ֥נֲשֵׁ֥י

’a·nă·šê

. לֵבָ֗ב

lê·ḇāḇ,

of understanding .

שִׁמְע֫וּ

šim·‘ū

לִ֥י

lî

to me

חָלִ֖לָה

ḥā·li·lāh

Far be it

､ לָאֵ֥ל

lā·’êl

– מֵרֶ֗שַׁע

mê·re·ša‘,

[to do] wickedness –

､ וְשַׁדַּ֥י

wə·šad·day

and [from] the Almighty ､

. מֵעָֽוֶל׃

mê·‘ā·wel.

to [commit] iniquity .

כִּ֤י

kî

For [according to]

פֹ֣עַל

p̄ō·‘al

אָ֭דָם

’ā·ḏām

יְשַׁלֶּם־

yə·šal·lem-

ל֑וֹ

lōw;

וּֽכְאֹ֥רַח

ū·ḵə·’ō·raḥ

and according to [his] way

אִ֝֗ישׁ

’îš,

. יַמְצִאֶֽנּוּ׃

yam·ṣi·’en·nū.

makes to find a reward .

､ אַף־

’ap̄-

Yes ､

אָמְנָ֗ם

’ā·mə·nām,

אֵ֥ל

’êl

לֹֽא־

lō-

､ יַרְשִׁ֑יעַ

yar·šî·a‘;

will do wickedly ､

וְ֝שַׁדַּ֗י

wə·šad·day,

and the Almighty

לֹֽא־

lō-

יְעַוֵּ֥ת

yə·‘aw·wêṯ

. מִשְׁפָּֽט׃

miš·pāṭ.

מִֽי־

mî-

פָקַ֣ד

p̄ā·qaḏ

עָלָ֣יו

‘ā·lāw

؟ אָ֑רְצָה

’ā·rə·ṣāh;

over the earth ؟

וּמִ֥י

ū·mî

Or who

שָׂ֝֗ם

m

appointed [Him]

תֵּבֵ֥ל

tê·ḇêl

[over] the world

؟ כֻּלָּֽהּ׃

kul·lāh.

אִם־

’im-

if

יָשִׂ֣ים

yā·śîm

אֵלָ֣יו

’ê·lāw

on it

לִבּ֑וֹ

lib·bōw;

רוּח֥וֹ

rū·ḥōw

– וְ֝נִשְׁמָת֗וֹ

wə·niš·mā·ṯōw,

and His breath –

אֵלָ֥יו

’ê·lāw

. יֶאֱסֹֽף׃

ye·’ĕ·sōp̄.

[If] He should gather .

יִגְוַ֣ע

yiḡ·wa‘

כָּל־

kāl-

בָּשָׂ֣ר

bā·śār

､ יָ֑חַד

yā·ḥaḏ;

וְ֝אָדָ֗ם

wə·’ā·ḏām,

and man

עַל־

‘al-

to

עָפָ֥ר

‘ā·p̄ār

. יָשֽׁוּב׃

yā·šūḇ.

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

And if

､ בִּ֥ינָה

bî·nāh

[you have] understanding ､

שִׁמְעָה־

šim·‘āh-

– זֹּ֑את

zōṯ;

this –

הַ֝אֲזִ֗ינָה

ha·’ă·zî·nāh,

לְק֣וֹל

lə·qō·wl

to the sound

. מִלָּֽי׃

mil·lāy.

of my words .

הַאַ֬ף

ha·’ap̄

שׂוֹנֵ֣א

śō·w·nê

מִשְׁפָּ֣ט

miš·pāṭ

؟ יַחֲב֑וֹשׁ

ya·ḥă·ḇō·wōš;

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

and

؟ צַדִּ֖יק

ṣad·dîq

כַּבִּ֣יר

kab·bîr

[Him who is] most

. תַּרְשִֽׁיעַ׃

tar·šî·a‘.

will you condemn .

הַאֲמֹ֣ר

ha·’ă·mōr

[is [it fitting] to say

､ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ

lə·me·leḵ

to a king ､

؟ בְּלִיָּ֑עַל

bə·lî·yā·‘al;

[You are] worthless ؟

؟ רָ֝שָׁ֗ע

rā·šā‘,

[You are] wicked ؟

אֶל־

’el-

[And] to

､ נְדִיבִֽים׃

nə·ḏî·ḇîm.

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

נָשָׂ֨א ׀

nā·śā

פְּנֵ֥י

pə·nê

to

､ שָׂרִ֗ים

śā·rîm,

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

נִכַּר־

nik·kar-

שׁ֭וֹעַ

šō·w·a‘

the rich

לִפְנֵי־

lip̄·nê-

؟ דָ֑ל

ḏāl;

the poor ؟

כִּֽי־

kî-

מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה

ma·‘ă·śêh

the work

יָדָ֣יו

yā·ḏāw

. כֻּלָּֽם׃

kul·lām.

they [are] all .

רֶ֤גַע ׀

re·ḡa‘

､ יָמֻתוּ֮

yā·mu·ṯū

וַחֲצ֪וֹת

wa·ḥă·ṣō·wṯ

and in the middle

､ לָ֥יְלָה

lā·yə·lāh

of the night ､

יְגֹעֲשׁ֣וּ

yə·ḡō·‘ă·šū

עָ֣ם

‘ām

– וְיַעֲבֹ֑רוּ

wə·ya·‘ă·ḇō·rū;

and pass away –

וְיָסִ֥ירוּ

wə·yā·sî·rū

and are taken away

אַ֝בִּ֗יר

’ab·bîr,

לֹ֣א

lō

. בְיָֽד׃

ḇə·yāḏ.

a hand .

כִּי־

kî-

עֵ֭ינָיו

‘ê·nāw

עַל־

‘al-

on

דַּרְכֵי־

dar·ḵê-

the ways

､ אִ֑ישׁ

’îš;

of man ､

וְֽכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

צְעָדָ֥יו

ṣə·‘ā·ḏāw

. יִרְאֶֽה׃

yir·’eh.

He sees .

אֵֽין־

’ên-

[There is] no

､ חֹ֭שֶׁךְ

ḥō·šeḵ

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

and no

､ צַלְמָ֑וֶת

ṣal·mā·weṯ;

shadow of death ､

. לְהִסָּ֥תֶר

lə·his·sā·ṯer

may hide themselves .

שָׁ֝֗ם

פֹּ֣עֲלֵי

pō·‘ă·lê

. אָֽוֶן׃

’ā·wen.

כִּ֤י

kî

לֹ֣א

not

עַל־

‘al-

on

אִ֭ישׁ

יָשִׂ֣ים

he need consider

ע֑וֹד

‘ō·wḏ;

לַהֲלֹ֥ךְ

la·hă·lōḵ

that He should go

אֶל־

’el-

אֵ֝֗ל

’êl,

. בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃

bam·miš·pāṭ.

יָרֹ֣עַ

yā·rō·a‘

He breaks in pieces

כַּבִּירִ֣ים

kab·bî·rîm

לֹא־

lō-

､ חֵ֑קֶר

ḥê·qer;

וַיַּעֲמֵ֖ד

way·ya·‘ă·mêḏ

and sets

אֲחֵרִ֣ים

’ă·ḥê·rîm

. תַּחְתָּֽם׃

taḥ·tām.

in their place .

לָכֵ֗ן

lā·ḵên,

יַ֭כִּיר

yak·kîr

､ מַעְבָּֽדֵיהֶ֑ם

ma‘·bā·ḏê·hem;

their works ､

וְהָ֥פַךְ

wə·hā·p̄aḵ

and He overthrows [them]

､ לַ֝֗יְלָה

lay·lāh,

in the night ､

. וְיִדַּכָּֽאוּ׃

wə·yid·dak·kā·’ū.

and they are crushed .

תַּֽחַת־

ta·ḥaṯ-

As

רְשָׁעִ֥ים

rə·šā·‘îm

סְפָקָ֗ם

sə·p̄ā·qām,

He strikes them

בִּמְק֥וֹם

bim·qō·wm

in the open

. רֹאִֽים׃

rō·’îm.

sight of others .

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּ֭ן

kên

סָ֣רוּ

sā·rū

they turned back

מֵֽאַחֲרָ֑יו

mê·’a·ḥă·rāw;

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and any

– דְּ֝רָכָ֗יו

də·rā·ḵāw,

of His ways –

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. הִשְׂכִּֽילוּ׃

hiś·kî·lū.

would consider .

לְהָבִ֣יא

lə·hā·ḇî

עָ֭לָיו

‘ā·lāw

to Him

צַֽעֲקַת־

ṣa·‘ă·qaṯ-

so that they caused the cry

דָּ֑ל

dāl;

of the poor

וְצַעֲקַ֖ת

wə·ṣa·‘ă·qaṯ

and the cry

עֲנִיִּ֣ים

‘ă·nî·yîm

of the afflicted

. יִשְׁמָֽע׃

yiš·mā‘.

וְה֤וּא

wə·hū

And when He

､ יַשְׁקִ֨ט ׀

yaš·qiṭ

gives quietness ､

וּמִ֥י

ū·mî

؟ יַרְשִׁ֗עַ

yar·ši·a‘,

can make trouble ؟

וְיַסְתֵּ֣ר

wə·yas·têr

and when He hides

､ פָּ֭נִים

pā·nîm

[His] face ､

וּמִ֣י

ū·mî

יְשׁוּרֶ֑נּוּ

yə·šū·ren·nū;

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

and Whether [it is] against

､ גּ֖וֹי

gō·w

a nation ､

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

or

אָדָ֣ם

’ā·ḏām

– יָֽחַד׃

yā·ḥaḏ.

､ מִ֭מְּלֹךְ

mim·mə·lōḵ

that should not reign ､

אָדָ֥ם

’ā·ḏām

חָנֵ֗ף

ḥā·nêp̄,

מִמֹּ֥קְשֵׁי

mim·mō·qə·šê

lest be ensnared

. עָֽם׃

‘ām.

the people .

כִּֽי־

kî-

אֶל־

’el-

I will offend more

､ אֵ֭ל

’êl

For ､

הֶאָמַ֥ר

he·’ā·mar

to

נָשָׂ֗אתִי

nā·śā·ṯî,

לֹ֣א

lō

has [anyone] said

. אֶחְבֹּֽל׃

’eḥ·bōl.

I have borne [chastening] .

בִּלְעֲדֵ֣י

bil·‘ă·ḏê

not

אֶ֭חֱזֶה

’e·ḥĕ·zeh

[what] I do see

אַתָּ֣ה

’at·tāh

הֹרֵ֑נִי

hō·rê·nî;

אִֽם־

’im-

if

､ עָ֥וֶל

‘ā·wel

פָּ֝עַ֗לְתִּי

pā·‘al·tî,

לֹ֣א

lō

no

. אֹסִֽיף׃

’ō·sîp̄.

I will do more .

הַֽמֵעִמְּךָ֬

ha·mê·‘im·mə·ḵā

Should according to your [terms]

יְשַׁלְמֶ֨נָּה

yə·šal·men·nāh

He repay [it]

כִּֽי־

kî-

､ מָאַ֗סְתָּ

mā·’as·tā,

you disavow it ､

כִּי־

kî-

אַתָּ֣ה

’at·tāh

– תִבְחַ֣ר

ṯiḇ·ḥar

must choose –

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

and not

– אָ֑נִי

’ā·nî;

I –

וּֽמַה־

ū·mah-

יָדַ֥עְתָּ

yā·ḏa‘·tā

. דַבֵּֽר׃

ḏab·bêr.

אַנְשֵׁ֣י

’an·šê

לֵ֭בָב

lê·ḇāḇ

of understanding

יֹ֣אמְרוּ

לִ֑י

to me

וְגֶ֥בֶר

wə·ḡe·ḇer

and men

חָ֝כָ֗ם

ḥā·ḵām,

שֹׁמֵ֥עַֽ

šō·mê·a‘

. לִֽי׃

lî.

to me .

אִ֭יּוֹב

’î·yō·wḇ

לֹא־

lō-

､ בְדַ֣עַת

ḇə·ḏa·‘aṯ

יְדַבֵּ֑ר

yə·ḏab·bêr;

וּ֝דְבָרָ֗יו

ū·ḏə·ḇā·rāw,

and His words [are]

לֹ֣א

lō

. בְהַשְׂכֵּֽיל׃

ḇə·haś·kêl.

אָבִ֗י

’ā·ḇî,

יִבָּחֵ֣ן

yib·bā·ḥên

אִיּ֣וֹב

’î·yō·wḇ

עַד־

‘aḏ-

to

נֶ֑צַח

ne·ṣaḥ;

עַל־

‘al-

תְּ֝שֻׁבֹ֗ת

tə·šu·ḇōṯ,

[his] answers [are like] those

בְּאַנְשֵׁי־

bə·’an·šê-

of men

. אָֽוֶן׃

’ā·wen.

כִּ֥י

kî

יֹ֘סִ֤יף

yō·sîp̄

עַֽל־

‘al-

to

､ חַטָּאת֣וֹ

ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw

פֶ֭שַׁע

p̄e·ša‘

בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ

bê·nê·nū

יִסְפּ֑וֹק

yis·pō·wq;

He claps [his hands]

וְיֶ֖רֶב

wə·ye·reḇ

אֲמָרָ֣יו

’ă·mā·rāw

. לָאֵֽל׃

lā·’êl.
