Job: No Arbiter Between God and Man

וַיַּ֥עַן

way·ya·‘an

אִיּ֗וֹב

’î·yō·wḇ,

､ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

way·yō·mar.

and said ､

– אָ֭מְנָם

’ā·mə·nām

יָדַ֣עְתִּי

yā·ḏa‘·tî

כִי־

ḵî-

כֵ֑ן

ḵên;

[it is] so

וּמַה־

ū·mah-

but how

יִּצְדַּ֖ק

yiṣ·daq

can be righteous

אֱנ֣וֹשׁ

’ĕ·nō·wōš

עִם־

‘im-

؟ אֵֽל׃

’êl.

God ؟

אִם־

’im-

if

יַ֭חְפֹּץ

yaḥ·pōṣ

לָרִ֣יב

lā·rîḇ

עִמּ֑וֹ

‘im·mōw;

with Him

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

יַ֝עֲנֶ֗נּוּ

ya·‘ă·nen·nū,

He could answer Him

אַחַ֥ת

’a·ḥaṯ

מִנִּי־

min·nî-

. אָֽלֶף׃

’ā·lep̄.

of a thousand .

חֲכַ֣ם

ḥă·ḵam

､ לֵ֭בָב

lê·ḇāḇ

in heart ､

וְאַמִּ֣יץ

wə·’am·mîṣ

､ כֹּ֑חַ

kō·aḥ;

in power ､

מִֽי־

mî-

הִקְשָׁ֥ה

hiq·šāh

has hardened [himself]

אֵ֝לָ֗יו

’ê·lāw,

؟ וַיִּשְׁלָֽם׃

way·yiš·lām.

and prospered ؟

הַמַּעְתִּ֣יק

ham·ma‘·tîq

､ הָ֭רִים

hā·rîm

the mountains ､

– וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not –

יָדָ֑עוּ

yā·ḏā·‘ū;

אֲשֶׁ֖ר

’ă·šer

הֲפָכָ֣ם

hă·p̄ā·ḵām

He overturns them

. בְּאַפּֽוֹ׃

bə·’ap·pōw.

הַמַּרְגִּ֣יז

ham·mar·gîz

אֶ֭רֶץ

’e·reṣ

､ מִמְּקוֹמָ֑הּ

mim·mə·qō·w·māh;

out of its place ､

וְ֝עַמּוּדֶ֗יהָ

wə·‘am·mū·ḏe·hā,

and its pillars

. יִתְפַלָּצֽוּן׃‪‬

yiṯ·p̄al·lā·ṣūn

הָאֹמֵ֣ר

hā·’ō·mêr

､ לַ֭חֶרֶס

la·ḥe·res

the sun ､

– וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not –

יִזְרָ֑ח

yiz·rāḥ;

וּבְעַ֖ד

ū·ḇə·‘aḏ

and

כּוֹכָבִ֣ים

kō·w·ḵā·ḇîm

. יַחְתֹּֽם׃

yaḥ·tōm.

נֹטֶ֣ה

nō·ṭeh

､ שָׁמַ֣יִם

šā·ma·yim

the heavens ､

לְבַדּ֑וֹ

lə·ḇad·dōw;

וְ֝דוֹרֵ֗ךְ

wə·ḏō·w·rêḵ,

עַל־

‘al-

on

בָּ֥מֳתֵי

bā·mo·ṯê

. יָֽם׃

yām.

of the sea .

עֹֽשֶׂה־

‘ō·śeh-

､ עָ֭שׁ

‘āš

the Bear ､

､ כְּסִ֥יל

kə·sîl

､ וְכִימָ֗ה

wə·ḵî·māh,

and the Pleiades ､

וְחַדְרֵ֥י

wə·ḥaḏ·rê

and the chambers

. תֵמָֽן׃

ṯê·mān.

of the south .

עֹשֶׂ֣ה

‘ō·śeh

גְ֭דֹלוֹת

ḡə·ḏō·lō·wṯ

עַד־

‘aḏ-

אֵ֣ין

’ên

– חֵ֑קֶר

ḥê·qer;

finding out –

וְנִפְלָא֗וֹת

wə·nip̄·lā·’ō·wṯ,

and Yes wonders

עַד־

‘aḏ-

אֵ֥ין

’ên

. מִסְפָּֽר׃

mis·pār.

､ הֵ֤ן

hên

If ､

יַעֲבֹ֣ר

ya·‘ă·ḇōr

עָ֭לַי

‘ā·lay

by me

– וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not –

אֶרְאֶ֑ה

’er·’eh;

I do see [Him]

וְ֝יַחֲלֹ֗ף

wə·ya·ḥă·lōp̄,

and if He moves past

וְֽלֹא־

wə·lō-

and not

אָבִ֥ין

’ā·ḇîn

. לֽוֹ׃

lōw.

､ הֵ֣ן

hên

If ､

､ יַ֭חְתֹּף

yaḥ·tōp̄

He takes away ､

מִ֣י

mî

יְשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ

yə·šî·ḇen·nū;

מִֽי־

mî-

יֹאמַ֥ר

yō·mar

אֵ֝לָ֗יו

’ê·lāw,

to Him

מַֽה־

mah-

. תַּעֲשֶֽׂה׃

are You doing .

אֱ֭לוֹהַּ

’ĕ·lō·w·ah

לֹא־

not

יָשִׁ֣יב

yā·šîḇ

､ אַפּ֑וֹ

’ap·pōw;

[תחתו]

ta·ḥa·ṯōw

(תַּחְתָּ֥יו)

עֹ֣זְרֵי

of the proud .

אָנֹכִ֣י

I

אֶֽעֱנֶ֑נּוּ

’e·‘ĕ·nen·nū;

אֶבְחֲרָ֖ה

’eḇ·ḥă·rāh

[And] choose

דְבָרַ֣י

ḏə·ḇā·ray

. עִמּֽוֹ׃

‘im·mōw.

[to reason] with Him .

､ אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

For ､

אִם־

’im-

､ צָ֭דַקְתִּי

ṣā·ḏaq·tî

I were righteous ､

לֹ֣א

lō

not

､ אֶעֱנֶ֑ה

’e·‘ĕ·neh;

I could answer Him ､

לִ֝מְשֹׁפְטִ֗י

lim·šō·p̄ə·ṭî,

of my Judge

. אֶתְחַנָּֽן׃

’eṯ·ḥan·nān.

I would beg mercy .

אִם־

’im-

If

､ קָרָ֥אתִי

qā·rā·ṯî

I called ､

וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי

way·ya·‘ă·nê·nî;

and He answered me

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

אַ֝אֲמִ֗ין

’a·’ă·mîn,

I would believe

כִּֽי־

kî-

יַאֲזִ֥ין

ya·’ă·zîn

He was listening

. קוֹלִֽי׃

qō·w·lî.

to my voice .

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

､ בִּשְׂעָרָ֥ה

biś·‘ā·rāh

with a tempest ､

יְשׁוּפֵ֑נִי

yə·šū·p̄ê·nî;

וְהִרְבָּ֖ה

wə·hir·bāh

פְצָעַ֣י

p̄ə·ṣā·‘ay

. חִנָּֽם׃

ḥin·nām.

without cause .

לֹֽא־

lō-

Not

יִ֭תְּנֵנִי

yit·tə·nê·nî

He will allow me

הָשֵׁ֣ב

hā·šêḇ

､ רוּחִ֑י

rū·ḥî;

my breath ､

כִּ֥י

kî

but

יַ֝שְׂבִּעַ֗נִי

yaś·bi·‘a·nî,

. מַמְּרֹרִֽים׃

mam·mə·rō·rîm.

with bitterness .

אִם־

’im-

If [it is a matter]

､ לְכֹ֣חַ

lə·ḵō·aḥ

of strength ､

– אַמִּ֣יץ

’am·mîṣ

[He is] strong –

､ הִנֵּ֑ה

hin·nêh;

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

and if

､ לְ֝מִשְׁפָּ֗ט

lə·miš·pāṭ,

of justice ､

מִ֣י

mî

. יוֹעִידֵֽנִי׃

yō·w·‘î·ḏê·nî.

will appoint my day [in court] .

אִם־

’im-

אֶ֭צְדָּק

’eṣ·dāq

I were righteous

פִּ֣י

pî

יַרְשִׁיעֵ֑נִי

yar·šî·‘ê·nî;

would condemn me

､ תָּֽם־

tām-

אָ֝֗נִי

’ā·nî,

Though I [were]

. וַֽיַּעְקְשֵֽׁנִי׃

way·ya‘·qə·šê·nî.

and it would prove me perverse .

､ תָּֽם־

tām-

אָ֭נִי

’ā·nî

I [am]

לֹֽא־

lō-

yet not

אֵדַ֥ע

’ê·ḏa‘

I do know

– נַפְשִׁ֗י

nap̄·šî,

אֶמְאַ֥ס

’em·’as

. חַיָּֽי׃

ḥay·yāy.

my life .

אַחַ֗ת

’a·ḥaṯ,

[all] one [thing]

הִ֥יא

hî

it [is]

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּ֥ן

kên

אָמַ֑רְתִּי

’ā·mar·tî;

תָּ֥ם

וְ֝רָשָׁ֗ע

wə·rā·šā‘,

and the wicked

ה֣וּא

He

. מְכַלֶּֽה׃

at the plight

of the innocent

אֶ֤רֶץ ׀

’e·reṣ

נִתְּנָ֬ה

nit·tə·nāh

בְֽיַד־

ḇə·yaḏ-

– רָשָׁ֗ע

rā·šā‘,

of the wicked –

פְּנֵֽי־

pə·nê-

שֹׁפְטֶ֥יהָ

šō·p̄ə·ṭe·hā

יְכַסֶּ֑ה

yə·ḵas·seh;

אִם־

’im-

if

､ לֹ֖א

lō

it is not [He] ､

､ אֵפ֣וֹא

’ê·p̄ō·w

else ､

מִי־

mî-

؟ הֽוּא׃

hū.

[is] it ؟

וְיָמַ֣י

wə·yā·may

and my days

קַ֭לּוּ

qal·lū

מִנִּי־

min·nî-

– רָ֑ץ

rāṣ;

a runner –

､ בָּֽ֝רְח֗וּ

bā·rə·ḥū,

they flee away ､

לֹא־

רָא֥וּ

. טוֹבָֽה׃

חָ֭לְפוּ

עִם־

‘im-

､ אֳנִיּ֣וֹת

אֵבֶ֑ה

’ê·ḇeh;

כְּ֝נֶ֗שֶׁר

kə·ne·šer,

יָט֥וּשׂ

yā·ṭūś

עֲלֵי־

‘ă·lê-

on

. אֹֽכֶל׃

’ō·ḵel.

אִם־

’im-

If

､ אָ֭מְרִי

’ā·mə·rî

I say ､

אֶשְׁכְּחָ֣ה

’eš·kə·ḥāh

I will forget

､ שִׂיחִ֑י

śî·ḥî;

my complaint ､

אֶעֶזְבָ֖ה

’e·‘ez·ḇāh

I will put off

､ פָנַ֣י

p̄ā·nay

my sad face ､

. וְאַבְלִֽיגָה׃

wə·’aḇ·lî·ḡāh.

and wear a smile .

יָגֹ֥רְתִּי

yā·ḡō·rə·tî

כָל־

ḵāl

of all

､ עַצְּבֹתָ֑י

‘aṣ·ṣə·ḇō·ṯāy;

my sufferings ､

יָ֝דַ֗עְתִּי

yā·ḏa‘·tî,

כִּי־

kî-

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. תְנַקֵּֽנִי׃

ṯə·naq·qê·nî.

You will hold me innocent .

אָנֹכִ֥י

’ā·nō·ḵî

[If] I

､ אֶרְשָׁ֑ע

’er·šā‘;

am condemned ､

לָמָּה־

lām·māh-

זֶּ֝֗ה

zeh,

הֶ֣בֶל

he·ḇel

؟ אִיגָֽע׃

’î·ḡā‘.

I labor ؟

אִם־

’im-

if

הִתְרָחַ֥צְתִּי

hiṯ·rā·ḥaṣ·tî

[במו־]

ḇə·mōw

-

(בְמֵי־)

ḇə·mê-

with water

､ שָׁ֑לֶג

šā·leḡ;

snow ､

– וַ֝הֲזִכּ֗וֹתִי

wa·hă·zik·kō·w·ṯî,

and cleanse –

בְּבֹ֣ר

bə·ḇōr

with soap

. כַּפָּֽי׃

kap·pāy.

my hands .

אָ֭ז

’āz

､ בַּשַּׁ֣חַת

baš·ša·ḥaṯ

into the pit ､

תִּטְבְּלֵ֑נִי

tiṭ·bə·lê·nî;

You will plunge me

וְ֝תִֽעֲב֗וּנִי

wə·ṯi·‘ă·ḇū·nî,

and will abhor me

. שַׂלְמוֹתָֽי׃

śal·mō·w·ṯāy.

my own clothes .

כִּי־

､ אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

[He is] a man ､

כָּמֹ֣נִי

kā·mō·nî

as I [am]

אֶֽעֱנֶ֑נּוּ

’e·‘ĕ·nen·nū;

[That] I may answer Him

נָב֥וֹא

nā·ḇō·w

יַ֝חְדָּ֗ו

yaḥ·dāw,

[And that] we should go

. בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃

bam·miš·pāṭ.

To court .

לֹ֣א

יֵשׁ־

yêš-

בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ

bê·nê·nū

מוֹכִ֑יחַ

mō·w·ḵî·aḥ;

יָשֵׁ֖ת

יָד֣וֹ

עַל־

‘al-

on

. שְׁנֵֽינוּ׃

šə·nê·nū.

the two of us .

יָסֵ֣ר

yā·sêr

Let Him take away

מֵעָלַ֣י

mê·‘ā·lay

שִׁבְט֑וֹ

šiḇ·ṭōw;

וְ֝אֵמָת֗וֹ

wə·’ê·mā·ṯōw,

and dread of Him

אַֽל־

’al-

not

. תְּבַעֲתַֽנִּי׃

tə·ḇa·‘ă·ṯan·nî.

do let terrify me .

､ אַֽ֭דַבְּרָה

’a·ḏab·bə·rāh

[Then] I would speak ､

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

אִירָאֶ֑נּוּ

’î·rā·’en·nū;

כִּ֥י

kî

but

לֹא־

lō-

not

כֵ֥ן

ḵên

it is so

אָ֝נֹכִ֗י

’ā·nō·ḵî,

I

. עִמָּדִֽי׃

with me .
