. תֵּחָ֔ת

קַ֣ח

qaḥ

עִמְּךָ֗

‘im·mə·ḵā,

with you

אֵ֚ת

’êṯ

-

כָּל־

kāl-

עַ֣ם

‘am

הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה

ham·mil·ḥā·māh,

of war

､ וְק֖וּם

wə·qūm

and arise ､

עֲלֵ֣ה

‘ă·lêh

go up

– הָעָ֑י

hā·‘āy;

to Ai –

､ רְאֵ֣ה ׀

rə·’êh

See ､

נָתַ֣תִּי

nā·ṯat·tî

בְיָדְךָ֗

ḇə·yā·ḏə·ḵā,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

מֶ֤לֶךְ

me·leḵ

the king

､ הָעַי֙

hā·‘ay

of Ai ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

､ עַמּ֔וֹ

‘am·mōw,

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

､ עִיר֖וֹ

‘î·rōw

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

. אַרְצֽוֹ׃

’ar·ṣōw.

וְעָשִׂ֨יתָ

wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā

And you shall do

לָעַ֜י

lā·‘ay

to Ai

וּלְמַלְכָּ֗הּ

ū·lə·mal·kāh,

כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

עָשִׂ֤יתָ

‘ā·śî·ṯā

לִֽירִיחוֹ֙

lî·rî·ḥōw

– וּלְמַלְכָּ֔הּ

ū·lə·mal·kāh,

and its king –

רַק־

raq-

שְׁלָלָ֥הּ

šə·lā·lāh

וּבְהֶמְתָּ֖הּ

ū·ḇə·hem·tāh

תָּבֹ֣זּוּ

tā·ḇōz·zū

you shall take as booty

לָכֶ֑ם

lā·ḵem;

שִׂים־

śîm-

לְךָ֥

lə·ḵā

to you

אֹרֵ֛ב

’ō·rêḇ

לָעִ֖יר

lā·‘îr

. מֵאַחֲרֶֽיהָ׃

mê·’a·ḥă·re·hā.

､ וַיָּ֧קָם

way·yā·qām

So arose ､

יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ

yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

עַ֥ם

‘am

､ הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה

ham·mil·ḥā·māh

of war ､

לַעֲל֣וֹת

la·‘ă·lō·wṯ

to go up against

– הָעָ֑י

hā·‘āy;

Ai –

וַיִּבְחַ֣ר

way·yiḇ·ḥar

יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ

yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘

שְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים

šə·lō·šîm

אֶ֤לֶף

’e·lep̄

אִישׁ֙

’îš

גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י

gib·bō·w·rê

､ הַחַ֔יִל

ha·ḥa·yil,

of valor ､

וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֖ם

way·yiš·lā·ḥêm

and sent them away

. לָֽיְלָה׃

lā·yə·lāh.

by night .

וַיְצַ֨ו

way·ṣaw

And he commanded

אֹתָ֜ם

’ō·ṯām

､ לֵאמֹ֗ר

lê·mōr,

､ רְ֠אוּ

rə·’ū

אַתֶּ֞ם

’at·tem

אֹרְבִ֤ים

’ō·rə·ḇîm

shall lie in ambush

､ לָעִיר֙

lā·‘îr

against the city ､

מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י

mê·’a·ḥă·rê

､ הָעִ֔יר

hā·‘îr,

the city ､

אַל־

’al-

not

תַּרְחִ֥יקוּ

tar·ḥî·qū

do go far

מִן־

min-

､ הָעִ֖יר

hā·‘îr

the city ､

מְאֹ֑ד

mə·’ōḏ;

וִהְיִיתֶ֥ם

wih·yî·ṯem

but be

כֻּלְּכֶ֖ם

kul·lə·ḵem

. נְכֹנִֽים׃

nə·ḵō·nîm.

､ וַאֲנִ֗י

wa·’ă·nî,

And I ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

הָעָם֙

hā·‘ām

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

אִתִּ֔י

’it·tî,

with me

נִקְרַ֖ב

niq·raḇ

אֶל־

’el-

. הָעִ֑יר

hā·‘îr;

the city .

､ וְהָיָ֗ה

wə·hā·yāh,

And it will come about ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

יֵצְא֤וּ

yê·ṣə·’ū

לִקְרָאתֵ֙נוּ֙

liq·rā·ṯê·nū

כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

､ בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֔ה

bā·ri·šō·nāh,

at the first ､

וְנַ֖סְנוּ

wə·nas·nū

that we shall flee

. לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

lip̄·nê·hem.

וְיָצְא֣וּ

wə·yā·ṣə·’ū

For they will come out

אַחֲרֵ֗ינוּ

’a·ḥă·rê·nū,

עַ֣ד

‘aḏ

הַתִּיקֵ֤נוּ

hat·tî·qê·nū

אוֹתָם֙

’ō·w·ṯām

מִן־

min-

– הָעִ֔יר

hā·‘îr,

the city –

כִּ֣י

kî

､ יֹֽאמְר֔וּ

yō·mə·rū,

they will say ､

נָסִ֣ים

nā·sîm

[They are] fleeing

לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ

lə·p̄ā·nê·nū,

כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

– בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה

bā·ri·šō·nāh;

at the first –

וְנַ֖סְנוּ

wə·nas·nū

therefore we will flee

. לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

lip̄·nê·hem.

וְאַתֶּ֗ם

wə·’at·tem,

And you

תָּקֻ֙מוּ֙

tā·qu·mū

､ מֵהָ֣אוֹרֵ֔ב

mê·hā·’ō·w·rêḇ,

from the ambush ､

וְהוֹרַשְׁתֶּ֖ם

wə·hō·w·raš·tem

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָעִ֑יר

hā·‘îr;

the city ､

וּנְתָנָ֛הּ

ū·nə·ṯā·nāh

for will deliver it

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם

’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem

. בְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃

bə·yeḏ·ḵem.

into your hand .

､ וְהָיָ֞ה

wə·hā·yāh

And it will be ､

כְּתָפְשְׂכֶ֣ם

kə·ṯā·p̄ə·śə·ḵem

when you have taken

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָעִ֗יר

hā·‘îr,

the city ､

תַּצִּ֤יתוּ

taṣ·ṣî·ṯū

[that] you shall set

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָעִיר֙

hā·‘îr

the city

. בָּאֵ֔שׁ

bā·’êš,

on fire .

כִּדְבַ֥ר

kiḏ·ḇar

According to the commandment

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

. תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ

ta·‘ă·śū;

､ רְא֖וּ

rə·’ū

See ､

צִוִּ֥יתִי

ṣiw·wî·ṯî

I have commanded

. אֶתְכֶֽם׃

’eṯ·ḵem.

– וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֣ם

way·yiš·lā·ḥêm

Therefore sent them out –

יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ

yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘,

וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙

way·yê·lə·ḵū

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הַמַּאְרָ֔ב

ham·ma’·rāḇ,

lie in ambush ､

וַיֵּשְׁב֗וּ

way·yê·šə·ḇū,

בֵּ֧ין

bên

בֵּֽית־

bêṯ-

in

אֵ֛ל

’êl

וּבֵ֥ין

ū·ḇên

and

､ הָעַ֖י

hā·‘ay

Ai ､

מִיָּ֣ם

mî·yām

on the west side

– לָעָ֑י

lā·‘āy;

of Ai –

וַיָּ֧לֶן

way·yā·len

יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ

yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘

בַּלַּ֥יְלָה

bal·lay·lāh

הַה֖וּא

ha·hū

בְּת֥וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

. הָעָֽם׃

hā·‘ām.

the people .

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֤ם

way·yaš·kêm

And rose up early

יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙

yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘

､ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר

bab·bō·qer,

in the morning ､

וַיִּפְקֹ֖ד

way·yip̄·qōḏ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָעָ֑ם

hā·‘ām;

the people ､

､ וַיַּ֨עַל

way·ya·‘al

and went up ､

ה֜וּא

hū

he

וְזִקְנֵ֧י

wə·ziq·nê

and the elders

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל

yiś·rā·’êl

of Israel ､

לִפְנֵ֥י

lip̄·nê

הָעָ֖ם

hā·‘ām

. הָעָֽי׃

hā·‘āy.

to Ai .

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

And all

､ הָעָ֨ם

hā·‘ām

the people ､

הַמִּלְחָמָ֜ה

ham·mil·ḥā·māh

of war

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

אִתּ֗וֹ

’it·tōw,

with him

､ עָלוּ֙

‘ā·lū

went up ､

､ וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֔וּ

way·yig·gə·šū,

and drew near ､

וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

נֶ֣גֶד

ne·ḡeḏ

､ הָעִ֑יר

hā·‘îr;

the city ､

וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙

way·ya·ḥă·nū

מִצְּפ֣וֹן

miṣ·ṣə·p̄ō·wn

on the north side

. לָעַ֔י

lā·‘ay,

of Ai .

וְהַגַּ֖י

wə·hag·gay

And a valley [lay]

[בינו]

bê·nōw

-

(בֵּינָ֥יו)

bê·nāw

וּבֵין־

ū·ḇên-

and

. הָעָֽי׃

hā·‘āy.

Ai .

וַיִּקַּ֕ח

way·yiq·qaḥ

So he took

כַּחֲמֵ֥שֶׁת

ka·ḥă·mê·šeṯ

אֲלָפִ֖ים

’ă·lā·p̄îm

､ אִ֑ישׁ

’îš;

men ､

וַיָּ֨שֶׂם

way·yā·śem

and set

אוֹתָ֜ם

’ō·w·ṯām

אֹרֵ֗ב

’ō·rêḇ,

בֵּ֧ין

bên

בֵּֽית־

bêṯ-

in

אֵ֛ל

’êl

וּבֵ֥ין

ū·ḇên

and

､ הָעַ֖י

hā·‘ay

Ai ､

מִיָּ֥ם

mî·yām

on the west side

. לָעִֽיר׃

lā·‘îr.

of the city .

וַיָּשִׂ֨ימוּ

way·yā·śî·mū

And when they had set

､ הָעָ֜ם

hā·‘ām

the people ､

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗ה

ham·ma·ḥă·neh,

the army

אֲשֶׁר֙

’ă·šer

מִצְּפ֣וֹן

miṣ·ṣə·p̄ō·wn

on the north

､ לָעִ֔יר

lā·‘îr,

of the city ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

עֲקֵב֖וֹ

‘ă·qê·ḇōw

מִיָּ֣ם

mî·yām

on the west

､ לָעִ֑יר

lā·‘îr;

of the city ､

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ

way·yê·leḵ

and went

יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ

yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘

בַּלַּ֥יְלָה

bal·lay·lāh

הַה֖וּא

ha·hū

בְּת֥וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

. הָעֵֽמֶק׃

hā·‘ê·meq.

of the valley .

､ וַיְהִ֞י

way·hî

And it came to pass ､

כִּרְא֣וֹת

kir·’ō·wṯ

מֶֽלֶךְ־

me·leḵ-

the king

הָעַ֗י

hā·‘ay,

of Ai

וַֽיְמַהֲר֡וּ

way·ma·hă·rū

､ וַיַּשְׁכִּ֡ימוּ

way·yaš·kî·mū

and rose early ､

וַיֵּצְא֣וּ

way·yê·ṣə·’ū

אַנְשֵֽׁי־

’an·šê-

the men

הָעִ֣יר

hā·‘îr

of the city

לִקְרַֽאת־

liq·raṯ-

יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל

yiś·rā·’êl

､ לַֽמִּלְחָמָ֞ה

lam·mil·ḥā·māh

to battle ､

ה֧וּא

hū

he

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

､ עַמּ֛וֹ

‘am·mōw

､ לַמּוֹעֵ֖ד

lam·mō·w·‘êḏ

at an appointed place ､

לִפְנֵ֣י

lip̄·nê

– הָֽעֲרָבָ֑ה

hā·‘ă·rā·ḇāh;

the plain –

וְהוּא֙

wə·hū

but he

לֹ֣א

יָדַ֔ע

yā·ḏa‘,

כִּֽי־

kî-

אֹרֵ֥ב

’ō·rêḇ

[there was] an ambush

ל֖וֹ

lōw

מֵאַחֲרֵ֥י

mê·’a·ḥă·rê

. הָעִֽיר׃

hā·‘îr.

the city .

וַיִּנָּֽגְע֛וּ

way·yin·nā·ḡə·‘ū

And made as if they were beaten

יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ

yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם

lip̄·nê·hem;

וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ

way·yā·nu·sū

and fled

דֶּ֥רֶךְ

de·reḵ

by the way

. הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃

ham·miḏ·bār.

of the wilderness .

וַיִּזָּעֲק֗וּ

way·yiz·zā·‘ă·qū,

So were called together

כָּל־

kāl-

הָעָם֙

hā·‘ām

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

[בעיר]

bā·‘îr

-

. (בָּעַ֔י)

in Ai .

לִרְדֹּ֖ף

אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם

וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙

and they pursued

אַחֲרֵ֣י

’a·ḥă·rê

､ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ

yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘,

וַיִּנָּתְק֖וּ

way·yin·nā·ṯə·qū

and were drawn away

. הָעִֽיר׃

the city .

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

And not

נִשְׁאַ֣ר

niš·’ar

אִ֗ישׁ

’îš,

בָּעַי֙

bā·‘ay

in Ai

וּבֵ֣ית

ū·ḇêṯ

､ אֵ֔ל

’êl,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

לֹֽא־

יָצְא֖וּ

וַיַּעַזְב֤וּ

הָעִיר֙

the city

､ פְּתוּחָ֔ה

pə·ṯū·ḥāh,

open ､

וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ

way·yir·də·p̄ū

אַחֲרֵ֥י

’a·ḥă·rê

. יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

And said

､ יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ

נְ֠טֵה

בַּכִּיד֤וֹן

the battle lance

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

that [is]

בְּיָֽדְךָ֙

bə·yā·ḏə·ḵā

אֶל־

’el-

– הָעַ֔י

hā·‘ay,

Ai –

כִּ֥י

kî

. בְיָדְךָ֖

ḇə·yā·ḏə·ḵā

into your hand .

אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה

’et·tə·nen·nāh;

I will give it

וַיֵּ֧ט

way·yêṭ

and stretched out

יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ

yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘

בַּכִּיד֥וֹן

bak·kî·ḏō·wn

the battle lance

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

בְּיָד֖וֹ

bə·yā·ḏōw

אֶל־

’el-

. הָעִֽיר׃

hā·‘îr.

the city .

וְהָאוֹרֵ֡ב

wə·hā·’ō·w·rêḇ

So [those in] ambush

קָם֩

qām

מְהֵרָ֨ה

mə·hê·rāh

､ מִמְּקוֹמ֤וֹ

mim·mə·qō·w·mōw

out of their place ､

וַיָּר֙וּצוּ֙

way·yā·rū·ṣū

כִּנְט֣וֹת

kin·ṭō·wṯ

as soon as he had stretched out

､ יָד֔וֹ

yā·ḏōw,

וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

and they entered

､ הָעִ֖יר

hā·‘îr

the city ､

וַֽיִּלְכְּד֑וּהָ

way·yil·kə·ḏū·hā;

and took it

וַֽיְמַהֲר֔וּ

way·ma·hă·rū,

וַיַּצִּ֥יתוּ

way·yaṣ·ṣî·ṯū

and to set

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָעִ֖יר

hā·‘îr

the city

. בָּאֵֽשׁ׃

bā·’êš.

on fire .

וַיִּפְנ֣וּ

way·yip̄·nū

And when looked

אַנְשֵׁי֩

’an·šê

the men

הָעַ֨י

hā·‘ay

of Ai

אַחֲרֵיהֶ֜ם

’a·ḥă·rê·hem

､ וַיִּרְא֗וּ

way·yir·’ū,

and they saw ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֨ה

wə·hin·nêh

and behold ､

עָלָ֜ה

‘ā·lāh

עֲשַׁ֤ן

‘ă·šan

הָעִיר֙

hā·‘îr

of the city

､ הַשָּׁמַ֔יְמָה

haš·šā·may·māh,

to heaven ､

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

so no

הָיָ֨ה

hā·yāh

בָהֶ֥ם

ḇā·hem

יָדַ֛יִם

yā·ḏa·yim

לָנ֖וּס

lā·nūs

הֵ֣נָּה

hên·nāh

– וָהֵ֑נָּה

wā·hên·nāh;

or that way –

וְהָעָם֙

wə·hā·‘ām

and the people

הַנָּ֣ס

han·nās

הַמִּדְבָּ֔ר

ham·miḏ·bār,

to the wilderness

נֶהְפַּ֖ךְ

neh·paḵ

אֶל־

’el-

on

. הָרוֹדֵֽף׃

hā·rō·w·ḏêp̄.

וִיהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ

wî·hō·wō·šu·a‘

And when Joshua

וְכָֽל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל

yiś·rā·’êl

רָא֗וּ

rā·’ū,

כִּֽי־

kî-

לָכַ֤ד

lā·ḵaḏ

הָֽאֹרֵב֙

hā·’ō·rêḇ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָעִ֔יר

hā·‘îr,

the city ､

וְכִ֥י

wə·ḵî

､ עָלָ֖ה

‘ā·lāh

עֲשַׁ֣ן

‘ă·šan

הָעִ֑יר

hā·‘îr;

of the city

､ וַיָּשֻׁ֕בוּ

way·yā·šu·ḇū

and they turned back ､

וַיַּכּ֖וּ

way·yak·kū

and struck down

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אַנְשֵׁ֥י

’an·šê

the men

. הָעָֽי׃

hā·‘āy.

of Ai .

וְאֵ֨לֶּה

wə·’êl·leh

יָצְא֤וּ

yā·ṣə·’ū

מִן־

min-

הָעִיר֙

hā·‘îr

of the city

לִקְרָאתָ֔ם

liq·rā·ṯām,

וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ

way·yih·yū

so they were [caught]

､ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙

lə·yiś·rā·’êl

of Israel ､

בַּתָּ֔וֶךְ

bat·tā·weḵ,

in the midst

אֵ֥לֶּה

’êl·leh

､ מִזֶּ֖ה

miz·zeh

on this [side] ､

וְאֵ֣לֶּה

wə·’êl·leh

– מִזֶּ֑ה

miz·zeh;

on this [side] –

וַיַּכּ֣וּ

way·yak·kū

and they struck down

אוֹתָ֔ם

’ō·w·ṯām,

עַד־

‘aḏ-

בִּלְתִּ֥י

bil·tî

הִשְׁאִֽיר־

hiš·’îr-

ל֖וֹ

lōw

שָׂרִ֥יד

śā·rîḏ

. וּפָלִֽיט׃

ū·p̄ā·lîṭ.

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

But

מֶ֥לֶךְ

me·leḵ

the king

הָעַ֖י

hā·‘ay

of Ai

תָּ֣פְשׂוּ

tā·p̄ə·śū

､ חָ֑י

ḥāy;

וַיַּקְרִ֥בוּ

way·yaq·ri·ḇū

אֹת֖וֹ

’ō·ṯōw

אֶל־

’el-

to

. יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃

､ וַיְהִ֣י

way·hî

And it came to pass ､

כְּכַלּ֣וֹת

when had made an end

יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל

לַהֲרֹג֩

la·hă·rōḡ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

יֹשְׁבֵ֨י

the inhabitants

הָעַ֜י

hā·‘ay

of Ai

､ בַּשָּׂדֶ֗ה

baś·śā·ḏeh,

in the field ､

בַּמִּדְבָּר֙

bam·miḏ·bār

in the wilderness

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

רְדָפ֣וּם

rə·ḏā·p̄ūm

בּ֔וֹ

bōw,

וַֽיִּפְּל֥וּ

way·yip·pə·lū

and when they had fallen

כֻלָּ֛ם

ḵul·lām

לְפִי־

lə·p̄î-

by the edge

､ חֶ֖רֶב

ḥe·reḇ
