וַיֵּ֥רֶד

שִׁמְשׁ֖וֹן

､ תִּמְנָ֑תָה

tim·nā·ṯāh;

to Timnah ､

וַיַּ֥רְא

and saw

אִשָּׁ֛ה

’iš·šāh

בְּתִמְנָ֖תָה

bə·ṯim·nā·ṯāh

מִבְּנ֥וֹת

mib·bə·nō·wṯ

of the daughters

. פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

pə·liš·tîm.

of the Philistines .

､ וַיַּ֗עַל

way·ya·‘al,

So he went up ､

וַיַּגֵּד֙

way·yag·gêḏ

and told

לְאָבִ֣יו

lə·’ā·ḇîw

､ וּלְאִמּ֔וֹ

ū·lə·’im·mōw,

and mother ､

､ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

way·yō·mer,

and saying ､

אִשָּׁ֛ה

’iš·šāh

רָאִ֥יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî

בְתִמְנָ֖תָה

ḇə·ṯim·nā·ṯāh

מִבְּנ֣וֹת

mib·bə·nō·wṯ

of the daughters

– פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים

pə·liš·tîm;

of the Philistines –

וְעַתָּ֕ה

wə·‘at·tāh

קְחוּ־

qə·ḥū-

אוֹתָ֥הּ

’ō·w·ṯāh

לִּ֖י

lî

for me

. לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

lə·’iš·šāh.

as a wife .

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

ל֜וֹ

lōw

to him

אָבִ֣יו

’ā·ḇîw

וְאִמּ֗וֹ

wə·’im·mōw,

הַאֵין֩

ha·’ên

[is there] no

בִּבְנ֨וֹת

biḇ·nō·wṯ

among the daughters

､ אַחֶ֤יךָ

’a·ḥe·ḵā

of your brothers ､

וּבְכָל־

ū·ḇə·ḵāl

､ עַמִּי֙

‘am·mî

my people ､

אִשָּׁ֔ה

’iš·šāh,

כִּֽי־

kî-

אַתָּ֤ה

’at·tāh

הוֹלֵךְ֙

hō·w·lêḵ

לָקַ֣חַת

lā·qa·ḥaṯ

and get

אִשָּׁ֔ה

’iš·šāh,

מִפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים

mip·pə·liš·tîm

from Philistines

הָעֲרֵלִ֑ים

hā·‘ă·rê·lîm;

the uncircumcised

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said

שִׁמְשׁ֤וֹן

šim·šō·wn

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ אָבִיו֙

’ā·ḇîw

אוֹתָ֣הּ

’ō·w·ṯāh

קַֽח־

qaḥ-

לִ֔י

lî,

for me

כִּֽי־

הִ֖יא

יָשְׁרָ֥ה

. בְעֵינָֽי׃

מִפְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים

against the Philistines

וּבָעֵ֣ת

ū·ḇā·‘êṯ

הַהִ֔יא

ha·hî,

פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים

pə·liš·tîm

the Philistines

מֹשְׁלִ֥ים

mō·šə·lîm

. בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

bə·yiś·rā·’êl.

and with his father

､ וְאִמּ֖וֹ

and mother ､

､ תִּמְנָ֑תָה

tim·nā·ṯāh;

to Timnah ､

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

and came

עַד־

‘aḏ-

to

כַּרְמֵ֣י

kar·mê

– תִמְנָ֔תָה

ṯim·nā·ṯāh,

of Timnah –

､ וְהִנֵּה֙

wə·hin·nêh

and [to his] surprise ､

כְּפִ֣יר

kə·p̄îr

אֲרָי֔וֹת

’ă·rā·yō·wṯ,

שֹׁאֵ֖ג

šō·’êḡ

. לִקְרָאתֽוֹ׃

liq·rā·ṯōw.

וַתִּצְלַ֨ח

wat·tiṣ·laḥ

And came mightily

עָלָ֜יו

‘ā·lāw

ר֣וּחַ

rū·aḥ

יְהוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

וַֽיְשַׁסְּעֵ֙הוּ֙

way·šas·sə·‘ê·hū

and he tore the lion apart

כְּשַׁסַּ֣ע

kə·šas·sa‘

as one would have torn apart

､ הַגְּדִ֔י

hag·gə·ḏî,

a young goat ､

וּמְא֖וּמָה

ū·mə·’ū·māh

אֵ֣ין

’ên

[he had] nothing

– בְּיָד֑וֹ

bə·yā·ḏōw;

in his hand –

וְלֹ֤א

wə·lō

but not

הִגִּיד֙

hig·gîḏ

לְאָבִ֣יו

lə·’ā·ḇîw

וּלְאִמּ֔וֹ

ū·lə·’im·mōw,

אֵ֖ת

’êṯ

-

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

. עָשָֽׂה׃

‘ā·śāh.

､ וַיֵּ֖רֶד

way·yê·reḏ

And he went down ､

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר

way·ḏab·bêr

– לָאִשָּׁ֑ה

lā·’iš·šāh;

with the woman –

וַתִּישַׁ֖ר

wat·tî·šar

and she pleased well

בְּעֵינֵ֥י

bə·‘ê·nê

. שִׁמְשֽׁוֹן׃

šim·šō·wn.

Samson's Riddle

וַיָּ֤שָׁב

way·yā·šāḇ

And when he returned

מִיָּמִים֙

mî·yā·mîm

after some time

לְקַחְתָּ֔הּ

lə·qaḥ·tāh,

וַיָּ֣סַר

way·yā·sar

and he turned aside

לִרְא֔וֹת

lir·’ō·wṯ,

to see

אֵ֖ת

’êṯ

-

מַפֶּ֣לֶת

map·pe·leṯ

– הָאַרְיֵ֑ה

hā·’ar·yêh;

of the lion –

､ וְהִנֵּ֨ה

wə·hin·nêh

and behold ､

עֲדַ֧ת

‘ă·ḏaṯ

דְּבוֹרִ֛ים

də·ḇō·w·rîm

בִּגְוִיַּ֥ת

biḡ·wî·yaṯ

in the carcass

הָאַרְיֵ֖ה

hā·’ar·yêh

of the lion

. וּדְבָֽשׁ׃

ū·ḏə·ḇāš.

and honey .

וַיִּרְדֵּ֣הוּ

way·yir·dê·hū

And He took some of it

אֶל־

’el-

in

､ כַּפָּ֗יו

kap·pāw,

וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ

way·yê·leḵ

and went

הָלוֹךְ֙

hā·lō·wḵ

､ וְאָכֹ֔ל

wə·’ā·ḵōl,

and eating ､

וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙

way·yê·leḵ

and when he came

אֶל־

’el-

to

אָבִ֣יו

’ā·ḇîw

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and

､ אִמּ֔וֹ

’im·mōw,

וַיִּתֵּ֥ן

way·yit·tên

and he gave [some]

לָהֶ֖ם

lā·hem

– וַיֹּאכֵ֑לוּ

way·yō·ḵê·lū;

and they ate –

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

but not

הִגִּ֣יד

hig·gîḏ

לָהֶ֔ם

lā·hem,

כִּ֛י

kî

מִגְּוִיַּ֥ת

mig·gə·wî·yaṯ

out of the carcass

הָאַרְיֵ֖ה

hā·’ar·yêh

of the lion

רָדָ֥ה

rā·ḏāh

. הַדְּבָֽשׁ׃

had·də·ḇāš.

the honey .

וַיֵּ֥רֶד

way·yê·reḏ

אָבִ֖יהוּ

’ā·ḇî·hū

אֶל־

’el-

to

– הָאִשָּׁ֑ה

hā·’iš·šāh;

the woman –

וַיַּ֨עַשׂ

way·ya·‘aś

and gave

שָׁ֤ם

šām

שִׁמְשׁוֹן֙

šim·šō·wn

– מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה

miš·teh,

a feast –

כִּ֛י

kî

כֵּ֥ן

kên

so

יַעֲשׂ֖וּ

ya·‘ă·śū

used to do

. הַבַּחוּרִֽים׃

hab·ba·ḥū·rîm.

､ וַיְהִ֖י

way·hî

And it came to pass ､

כִּרְאוֹתָ֣ם

kir·’ō·w·ṯām

אוֹת֑וֹ

’ō·w·ṯōw;

וַיִּקְחוּ֙

way·yiq·ḥū

that they brought

שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים

šə·lō·šîm

מֵֽרֵעִ֔ים

mê·rê·‘îm,

וַיִּהְי֖וּ

way·yih·yū

and to be

. אִתּֽוֹ׃

’it·tōw.

with him .

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

לָהֶם֙

lā·hem

שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן

šim·šō·wn,

אָחֽוּדָה־

’ā·ḥū·ḏāh-

נָּ֥א

nā

לָכֶ֖ם

lā·ḵem

to you

חִידָ֑ה

ḥî·ḏāh;

אִם־

’im-

if

הַגֵּ֣ד

hag·gêḏ

תַּגִּידוּ֩

tag·gî·ḏū

you can solve and explain

אוֹתָ֨הּ

then I will give

לָכֶם֙

שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים

סְדִינִ֔ים

sə·ḏî·nîm,

וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים

ū·šə·lō·šîm

חֲלִפֹ֥ת

ḥă·li·p̄ōṯ

. בְּגָדִֽים׃

bə·ḡā·ḏîm.

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

But if

לֹ֣א

lō

תוּכְלוּ֮

ṯū·ḵə·lū

you explain [it]

לְהַגִּ֣יד

lə·hag·gîḏ

to me

לִי֒

lî

to

וּנְתַתֶּ֨ם

ū·nə·ṯat·tem

then shall give

אַתֶּ֥ם

’at·tem

לִי֙

lî

me

שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים

šə·lō·šîm

סְדִינִ֔ים

sə·ḏî·nîm,

וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים

ū·šə·lō·šîm

חֲלִיפ֣וֹת

ḥă·lî·p̄ō·wṯ

. בְּגָדִ֑ים

bə·ḡā·ḏîm;

וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ

way·yō·mə·rū

ל֔וֹ

lōw,

to him

ח֥וּדָה

ḥū·ḏāh

､ חִידָתְךָ֖

ḥî·ḏā·ṯə·ḵā

your riddle ､

. וְנִשְׁמָעֶֽנָּה׃

wə·niš·mā·‘en·nāh.

that we may hear it .

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

So he said

לָהֶ֗ם

lā·hem,

מֵהָֽאֹכֵל֙

mê·hā·’ō·ḵêl

Out of the eater

יָצָ֣א

yā·ṣā

､ מַאֲכָ֔ל

ma·’ă·ḵāl,

something to eat ､

וּמֵעַ֖ז

ū·mê·‘az

and out of the strong

יָצָ֣א

yā·ṣā

. מָת֑וֹק

mā·ṯō·wq;

something sweet .

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

And not

יָכְל֛וּ

yā·ḵə·lū

לְהַגִּ֥יד

lə·hag·gîḏ

הַחִידָ֖ה

ha·ḥî·ḏāh

שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת

šə·lō·šeṯ

. יָמִֽים׃

yā·mîm.

וַיְהִ֣י ׀

way·hî

But it came to pass

､ בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

on the day ､

הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י

haš·šə·ḇî·‘î,

וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ

way·yō·mə·rū

､ לְאֵֽשֶׁת־

lə·’ê·šeṯ-

to wife ､

שִׁמְשׁוֹן֙

šim·šō·wn

פַּתִּ֣י

pat·tî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ אִישֵׁ֗ךְ

’î·šêḵ,

your husband ､

וְיַגֶּד־

wə·yag·geḏ-

that he may explain

לָ֙נוּ֙

lā·nū

to us

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַ֣חִידָ֔ה

ha·ḥî·ḏāh,

the riddle ､

פֶּן־

pen-

נִשְׂרֹ֥ף

niś·rōp̄

we will burn

אוֹתָ֛ךְ

’ō·w·ṯāḵ

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

בֵּ֥ית

bêṯ

אָבִ֖יךְ

’ā·ḇîḵ

. בָּאֵ֑שׁ

bā·’êš;

with fire .

؟ הַלְיָרְשֵׁ֕נוּ

hal·yā·rə·šê·nū

Have in order to take what is ours ؟

קְרָאתֶ֥ם

qə·rā·ṯem

לָ֖נוּ

lā·nū

us

. הֲלֹֽא׃

hă·lō.

[is that] not [so] .

וַתֵּבְךְּ֩

wat·tê·ḇək

And wept

אֵ֨שֶׁת

’ê·šeṯ

שִׁמְשׁ֜וֹן

עָלָ֗יו

‘ā·lāw,

on him

､ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙

and said ､

רַק־

raq-

שְׂנֵאתַ֙נִי֙

– וְלֹ֣א

and not –

אֲהַבְתָּ֔נִי

’ă·haḇ·tā·nî,

You do love me

הַֽחִידָ֥ה

ha·ḥî·ḏāh

חַ֙דְתָּ֙

ḥaḏ·tā

לִבְנֵ֣י

liḇ·nê

to the sons

､ עַמִּ֔י

‘am·mî,

of my people ､

וְלִ֖י

wə·lî

but to me

לֹ֣א

lō

not

הִגַּ֑דְתָּה

hig·gaḏ·tāh;

you have explained [it]

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and he said

לָ֗הּ

lāh,

to her

､ הִנֵּ֨ה

hin·nêh

Look ､

לְאָבִ֧י

lə·’ā·ḇî

to my father

､ וּלְאִמִּ֛י

ū·lə·’im·mî

or my mother ､

לֹ֥א

הִגַּ֖דְתִּי

I have explained [it]

וְלָ֥ךְ

so to you

. אַגִּֽיד׃

’ag·gîḏ.

should I explain [it] .

וַתֵּ֤בְךְּ

And she had wept

עָלָיו֙

‘ā·lāw

on him

שִׁבְעַ֣ת

šiḇ·‘aṯ

､ הַיָּמִ֔ים

hay·yā·mîm,

the days ､

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

. הָיָ֥ה

hā·yāh

לָהֶ֖ם

lā·hem

הַמִּשְׁתֶּ֑ה

ham·miš·teh;

וַיְהִ֣י ׀

way·hî

and it came to pass

､ בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

on the day ､

הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י

haš·šə·ḇî·‘î,

וַיַּגֶּד־

way·yag·geḏ-

לָהּ֙

lāh

כִּ֣י

kî

הֱצִיקַ֔תְהוּ

hĕ·ṣî·qaṯ·hū,

she pressed him so much

וַתַּגֵּ֥ד

wat·tag·gêḏ

and she explained

הַחִידָ֖ה

ha·ḥî·ḏāh

לִבְנֵ֥י

liḇ·nê

to the sons

. עַמָּֽהּ׃

‘am·māh.

of her people .

וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ

way·yō·mə·rū

לוֹ֩

lōw

to him

אַנְשֵׁ֨י

’an·šê

the men

הָעִ֜יר

hā·‘îr

of the city

בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

on the day

הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י

בְּטֶ֙רֶם֙

bə·ṭe·rem

､ יָבֹ֣א

yā·ḇō

הַחַ֔רְסָה

ha·ḥar·sāh,

the sun

מַה־

mah-

what [is]

מָּת֣וֹק

mā·ṯō·wq

؟ מִדְּבַ֔שׁ

mid·də·ḇaš,

וּמֶ֥ה

ū·meh

and what [is]

עַ֖ז

‘az

؟ מֵאֲרִ֑י

mê·’ă·rî;

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and he said

לָהֶ֔ם

lā·hem,

לוּלֵא֙

lū·lê

if not

חֲרַשְׁתֶּ֣ם

ḥă·raš·tem

､ בְּעֶגְלָתִ֔י

bə·‘eḡ·lā·ṯî,

with my heifer ､

לֹ֥א

lō

not

מְצָאתֶ֖ם

mə·ṣā·ṯem

You would have solved

. חִידָתִֽי׃

ḥî·ḏā·ṯî.

וַתִּצְלַ֨ח

wat·tiṣ·laḥ

And came mightily

עָלָ֜יו

and he went down

שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים

אִ֗ישׁ

’îš,

וַיִּקַּח֙

way·yiq·qaḥ

and took

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ חֲלִ֣יצוֹתָ֔ם

ḥă·lî·ṣō·w·ṯām,

their apparel ､

וַיִּתֵּן֙

way·yit·tên

and gave

הַחֲלִיפ֔וֹת

ha·ḥă·lî·p̄ō·wṯ,

the changes [of clothing]

לְמַגִּידֵ֖י

lə·mag·gî·ḏê

to those who had explained

. הַחִידָ֑ה

ha·ḥî·ḏāh;

the riddle .

､ וַיִּ֣חַר

way·yi·ḥar

So was aroused ､

אַפּ֔וֹ

’ap·pōw,

וַיַּ֖עַל

way·ya·‘al

and he went back up

בֵּ֥ית

bêṯ

. אָבִֽיהוּ׃

’ā·ḇî·hū.

of to his father .

And was [given]

אֵ֣שֶׁת

’ê·šeṯ

שִׁמְשׁ֑וֹן

､ לְמֵ֣רֵעֵ֔הוּ

to his companion ､

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

רֵעָ֖ה

rê·‘āh

had been best man
