A Gentle Answer Turns Away Wrath

מַֽעֲנֶה־

ma·‘ă·neh-

רַּ֭ךְ

raḵ

יָשִׁ֣יב

yā·šîḇ

､ חֵמָ֑ה

ḥê·māh;

וּדְבַר־

ū·ḏə·ḇar-

but a word

עֶ֝֗צֶב

‘e·ṣeḇ,

יַעֲלֶה־

ya·‘ă·leh-

. אָֽף׃

’āp̄.

לְשׁ֣וֹן

lə·šō·wn

חֲ֭כָמִים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm

of the wise

– תֵּיטִ֣יב

tê·ṭîḇ

uses rightly –

דָּ֑עַת

dā·‘aṯ;

וּפִ֥י

ū·p̄î

but the mouth

כְ֝סִילִ֗ים

ḵə·sî·lîm,

יַבִּ֥יעַ

yab·bî·a‘

. אִוֶּֽלֶת׃

’iw·we·leṯ.

בְּֽכָל־

bə·ḵāl

､ מָ֭קוֹם

mā·qō·wm

עֵינֵ֣י

‘ê·nê

the eyes

יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

צֹ֝פ֗וֹת

ṣō·p̄ō·wṯ,

Keeping watch on

רָעִ֥ים

rā·‘îm

the evil

. וטוֹבִֽים׃‪‬

w·ṭō·w·ḇîm

and the good .

מַרְפֵּ֣א

mar·pê

לָ֭שׁוֹן

lā·šō·wn

a tongue [is]

עֵ֣ץ

‘êṣ

– חַיִּ֑ים

ḥay·yîm;

of life –

וְסֶ֥לֶף

wə·se·lep̄

but perverseness

בָּ֝֗הּ

bāh,

in it

שֶׁ֣בֶר

še·ḇer

. בְּרֽוּחַ׃

bə·rū·aḥ.

the spirit .

אֱוִ֗יל

’ĕ·wîl,

יִ֭נְאַץ

yin·’aṣ

､ מוּסַ֣ר

mū·sar

instruction ､

אָבִ֑יו

’ā·ḇîw;

וְשֹׁמֵ֖ר

wə·šō·mêr

but he who receives

תּוֹכַ֣חַת

tō·w·ḵa·ḥaṯ

. יַעְרִֽם׃

ya‘·rim.

בֵּ֣ית

bêṯ

[In] the house

צַ֭דִּיק

ṣad·dîq

of the righteous

– חֹ֣סֶן

ḥō·sen

[there is] treasure –

רָ֑ב

rāḇ;

וּבִתְבוּאַ֖ת

ū·ḇiṯ·ḇū·’aṯ

but in the revenue

רָשָׁ֣ע

rā·šā‘

of the wicked

. נֶעְכָּֽרֶת׃

ne‘·kā·reṯ.

שִׂפְתֵ֣י

śip̄·ṯê

The lips

חֲ֭כָמִים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm

of the wise

יְזָ֣רוּ

yə·zā·rū

､ דָ֑עַת

ḏā·‘aṯ;

וְלֵ֖ב

wə·lêḇ

but the heart

כְּסִילִ֣ים

kə·sî·lîm

of the fool

לֹא־

lō-

[does] not [do]

. כֵֽן׃

ḵên.

so .

זֶ֣בַח

ze·ḇaḥ

רְ֭שָׁעִים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת

tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ

[is] an abomination to

､ יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

וּתְפִלַּ֖ת

ū·ṯə·p̄il·laṯ

but the prayer

יְשָׁרִ֣ים

yə·šā·rîm

of the upright

. רְצוֹנֽוֹ׃

rə·ṣō·w·nōw.

[is] His delight .

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת

tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ

[is] an abomination to

､ יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

de·reḵ

the way

רָשָׁ֑ע

rā·šā‘;

of the wicked

וּמְרַדֵּ֖ף

ū·mə·rad·dêp̄

but him who follows

צְדָקָ֣ה

ṣə·ḏā·qāh

. יֶאֱהָֽב׃

ye·’ĕ·hāḇ.

He loves .

מוּסָ֣ר

mū·sār

Discipline [is]

רָ֭ע

rā‘

לְעֹזֵ֣ב

lə·‘ō·zêḇ

for him who forsakes

– אֹ֑רַח

’ō·raḥ;

the way –

שׂוֹנֵ֖א

śō·w·nê

[And] he who hates

תוֹכַ֣חַת

ṯō·w·ḵa·ḥaṯ

. יָמֽוּת׃

yā·mūṯ.

will die .

שְׁא֣וֹל

šə·’ō·wl

וַ֭אֲבַדּוֹן

wa·’ă·ḇad·dō·wn

and Destruction [are]

נֶ֣גֶד

ne·ḡeḏ

יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

אַ֝֗ף

’ap̄,

כִּֽי־

kî-

so

לִבּ֥וֹת

lib·bō·wṯ

בְּֽנֵי־

bə·nê-

of the sons

؟ אָדָֽם׃

’ā·ḏām.

of men ؟

לֹ֣א

lō

not

יֶאֱהַב־

ye·’ĕ·haḇ-

לֵ֭ץ

lêṣ

הוֹכֵ֣חַֽ

hō·w·ḵê·aḥ

one who corrects

ל֑וֹ

lōw;

אֶל־

’el-

to

חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm,

the wise

לֹ֣א

lō

. יֵלֵֽךְ׃

yê·lêḵ.

will he go .

לֵ֣ב

lêḇ

שָׂ֭מֵחַ

mê·aḥ

יֵיטִ֣ב

yê·ṭiḇ

makes a cheerful

､ פָּנִ֑ים

pā·nîm;

countenance ､

וּבְעַצְּבַת־

ū·ḇə·‘aṣ·ṣə·ḇaṯ-

but by sorrow

לֵ֝ב

lêḇ

of the heart

ר֣וּחַ

rū·aḥ

. נְכֵאָֽה׃

nə·ḵê·’āh.

לֵ֣ב

lêḇ

נָ֭בוֹן

nā·ḇō·wn

of him who has understanding

יְבַקֶּשׁ־

yə·ḇaq·qeš-

､ דָּ֑עַת

dā·‘aṯ;

[ופני]

ū·p̄ə·nê

(וּפִ֥י)

but the mouth of

כְ֝סִילִ֗ים

ḵə·sî·lîm,

יִרְעֶ֥ה

yir·‘eh

. אִוֶּֽלֶת׃

’iw·we·leṯ.

כָּל־

kāl-

יְמֵ֣י

yə·mê

the days

עָנִ֣י

‘ā·nî

of the afflicted

､ רָעִ֑ים

rā·‘îm;

[are] evil ､

וְטֽוֹב־

wə·ṭō·wḇ-

but he who is of a merry

לֵ֝֗ב

lêḇ,

מִשְׁתֶּ֥ה

miš·teh

. תָמִֽיד׃

ṯā·mîḏ.

טוֹב־

ṭō·wḇ-

מְ֭עַט

mə·‘aṭ

בְּיִרְאַ֣ת

bə·yir·’aṯ

with the fear

יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

מֵאוֹצָ֥ר

mê·’ō·w·ṣār

רָ֝֗ב

rāḇ,

וּמְה֥וּמָה

ū·mə·hū·māh

. בֽוֹ׃

ḇōw.

with .

ט֤וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

אֲרֻחַ֣ת

’ă·ru·ḥaṯ

יָ֭רָק

yā·rāq

וְאַהֲבָה־

wə·’a·hă·ḇāh-

and love is

שָׁ֑ם

šām;

מִשּׁ֥וֹר

miš·šō·wr

אָ֝ב֗וּס

’ā·ḇūs,

וְשִׂנְאָה־

wə·śin·’āh-

. בֽוֹ׃

ḇōw.

with .

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

חֵ֭מָה

ḥê·māh

יְגָרֶ֣ה

yə·ḡā·reh

､ מָד֑וֹן

mā·ḏō·wn;

וְאֶ֥רֶך‪‬

wə·’e·reḵ

but [he who is] slow

אַ֝פַּ֗יִם

’ap·pa·yim,

יַשְׁקִ֥יט

yaš·qîṭ

. רִֽיב׃

rîḇ.

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

de·reḵ

The way

עָ֭צֵל

‘ā·ṣêl

of the lazy [man]

כִּמְשֻׂ֣כַת

kim·śu·ḵaṯ

[is] like a hedge

､ חָ֑דֶק

ḥā·ḏeq;

of thorns ､

וְאֹ֖רַח

wə·’ō·raḥ

but the way

יְשָׁרִ֣ים

yə·šā·rîm

of the upright

. סְלֻלָֽה׃

sə·lu·lāh.

[is] a highway .

בֵּ֣ן

bên

חָ֭כָם

ḥā·ḵām

יְשַׂמַּח־

yə·śam·maḥ-

– אָ֑ב

’āḇ;

a father –

וּכְסִ֥יל

ū·ḵə·sîl

אָ֝דָ֗ם

’ā·ḏām,

בּוֹזֶ֥ה

bō·w·zeh

. אִמּֽוֹ׃

’im·mōw.

אִ֭וֶּלֶת

’iw·we·leṯ

Folly [is]

שִׂמְחָ֣ה

śim·ḥāh

לַחֲסַר־

la·ḥă·sar-

[to [him who is] lacking

､ לֵ֑ב

lêḇ;

discernment ､

וְאִ֥ישׁ

wə·’îš

but a man

תְּ֝בוּנָ֗ה

tə·ḇū·nāh,

of understanding

יְיַשֶׁר־

yə·yaš·šer-

. לָֽכֶת׃‪‬‪‬

lā·ḵeṯ.

､ הָפֵ֣ר

hā·p̄êr

Go awry ､

מַ֭חֲשָׁבוֹת

ma·ḥă·šā·ḇō·wṯ

בְּאֵ֣ין

bə·’ên

ס֑וֹד

sō·wḏ;

וּבְרֹ֖ב

ū·ḇə·rōḇ

but in the multitude

יוֹעֲצִ֣ים

yō·w·‘ă·ṣîm

. תָּקֽוּם׃

tā·qūm.

they are established .

שִׂמְחָ֣ה

śim·ḥāh

לָ֭אִישׁ

lā·’îš

בְּמַעֲנֵה־

bə·ma·‘ă·nêh-

by the answer

– פִ֑יו

p̄îw;

of his mouth –

וְדָבָ֖ר

wə·ḏā·ḇār

and a word [spoken]

､ בְּעִתּ֣וֹ

bə·‘it·tōw

in due season ､

מַה־

mah-

. טּֽוֹב׃

ṭō·wḇ.

good [it is] .

אֹ֣רַח

’ō·raḥ

The way

חַ֭יִּים

ḥay·yîm

לְמַ֣עְלָה

lə·ma‘·lāh

､ לְמַשְׂכִּ֑יל

lə·maś·kîl;

for the wise ､

לְמַ֥עַן

lə·ma·‘an

ס֝֗וּר

sūr,

he may turn away

מִשְּׁא֥וֹל

miš·šə·’ō·wl

. מָֽטָּה׃

māṭ·ṭāh.

בֵּ֣ית

bêṯ

､ גֵּ֭אִים

gê·’îm

of the proud ､

יִסַּ֥ח ׀

yis·saḥ

יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

וְ֝יַצֵּ֗ב

wə·yaṣ·ṣêḇ,

but He will establish

גְּב֣וּל

gə·ḇūl

. אַלְמָנָֽה׃

’al·mā·nāh.

of the widow .

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת

tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ

[are] an abomination

､ יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

to Yahweh ､

מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת

maḥ·šə·ḇō·wṯ

רָ֑ע

rā‘;

of the wicked

וּ֝טְהֹרִ֗ים

ū·ṭə·hō·rîm,

but [the words] of the pure

אִמְרֵי־

’im·rê-

. נֹֽעַם׃

nō·‘am.

[are] pleasant .

עֹכֵ֣ר

‘ō·ḵêr

– בֵּ֭יתוֹ

bê·ṯōw

his own house –

בּוֹצֵ֣עַ

bō·w·ṣê·a‘

He who is greedy for

בָּ֑צַע

bā·ṣa‘;

וְשׂוֹנֵ֖א

wə·śō·w·nê

but he who hates

מַתָּנֹ֣ת

mat·tā·nōṯ

. יִחְיֶֽה׃

yiḥ·yeh.

will live .

לֵ֣ב

lêḇ

צַ֭דִּיק

ṣad·dîq

of the righteous

יֶהְגֶּ֣ה

yeh·geh

､ לַעֲנ֑וֹת

la·‘ă·nō·wṯ;

to answer ､

וּפִ֥י

ū·p̄î

but the mouth

רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים

rə·šā·‘îm,

of the wicked

יַבִּ֥יעַ

yab·bî·a‘

. רָעֽוֹת׃

rā·‘ō·wṯ.

רָח֣וֹק

rā·ḥō·wq

יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

､ מֵרְשָׁעִ֑ים

mê·rə·šā·‘îm;

from the wicked ､

וּתְפִלַּ֖ת

ū·ṯə·p̄il·laṯ

but the prayer

צַדִּיקִ֣ים

ṣad·dî·qîm

of the righteous

. יִשְׁמָֽע׃

yiš·mā‘.

He hears .

מְֽאוֹר־

mə·’ō·wr-

עֵ֭ינַיִם

‘ê·na·yim

of the eyes

יְשַׂמַּֽח־

yə·śam·maḥ-

– לֵ֑ב

lêḇ;

the heart –

שְׁמוּעָ֥ה

šə·mū·‘āh

[And] a report

ט֝וֹבָ֗ה

ṭō·w·ḇāh,

תְּדַשֶּׁן־

tə·ḏaš·šen-

. עָֽצֶם׃

‘ā·ṣem.

the bones .

אֹ֗זֶן

’ō·zen,

The ear

שֹׁ֭מַעַת‪‬

šō·ma·‘aṯ

תּוֹכַ֣חַת

tō·w·ḵa·ḥaṯ

חַיִּ֑ים

ḥay·yîm;

בְּקֶ֖רֶב

bə·qe·reḇ

חֲכָמִ֣ים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm

the wise

. תָּלִֽין׃

tā·lîn.

will abide .

פּוֹרֵ֣עַ

pō·w·rê·a‘

He who disdains

מ֭וּסָר‪‬

mū·sār

מוֹאֵ֣ס

mō·w·’ês

､ נַפְשׁ֑וֹ

nap̄·šōw;

his own soul ､

וְשׁוֹמֵ֥עַ

wə·šō·w·mê·a‘

but he who heeds

תּ֝וֹכַ֗חַת

tō·w·ḵa·ḥaṯ,

ק֣וֹנֶה

qō·w·neh

. לֵּֽב׃

lêḇ.

understanding .

יִרְאַ֣ת

yir·’aṯ

The fear

יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

מוּסַ֣ר

mū·sar

[is] the instruction

– חָכְמָ֑ה

ḥāḵ·māh

of wisdom –

וְלִפְנֵ֖י

wə·lip̄·nê

כָב֣וֹד

ḵā·ḇō·wḏ

honor [is]

. עֲנָוָֽה׃

‘ă·nā·wāh.
