John 5:1-13 - A Paralytic Is Healed

¹ After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. ² Now there is in Jerusalem, by the sheep-gate, a bath, which is called in the Hebrew tongue, Bethesda, having five porticos. ³ In these lay a great multitude of diseased, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. ⁴ For an angel went down at certain times into the bath, and the water was troubled: and whosoever went in first, after the troubling of the water, was made whole, whatsoever disease he had.

⁵ And a certain man was there, who had been diseased eight and thirty years. ⁶ Jesus seeing him lie, and knowing that he had now been diseased a long time, saith to him, Desirest thou to be made whole?

⁷ The infirm man answered him, Sir, I have no man to put me into the bath, when the water is troubled; and while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

⁸ Jesus saith to him, Rise, take up thy bed and walk. ⁹ And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked: and the same day was the sabbath. ¹⁰ Then said the Jews to him that was healed, It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up the bed.

¹¹ He answered, He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed and walk.

¹² Then asked they him, Who is the man that said to thee, Take up thy bed and walk? ¹³ And he that was healed knew not who he was; for Jesus had retired, a multitude being in the place.
