Mark 10:35-45 - A Request By James And John

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him saying: Teacher, we want you to do for us what we ask of you.

He asked: What do you want me to do for you?

They said to him: Allow us to sit next to you in your glory. One could sit on your right hand, and one on your left hand.

You do not know what you ask, Jesus replied. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

They said: We are able. Jesus replied: The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism that I am baptized you will be baptized. 40 But to sit on my right hand or on my left hand is not mine to give. It is for them for whom it has been prepared. 41 When the ten heard it they were indignant with James and John.

Jesus called them together and said: You know that those who rule over the nations lord it over them. Their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 It is not so among you. Whoever would become great among you, shall be your minister (servant) (attendant). 44 Whoever would be first among you, shall be servant of all. 45 For the Son of man also came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
