Mark 10:35-45 - A Request By James And John

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come to Him, saying to Him, "Teacher, we wish that Thou wouldest do for us whatsoever we ask."

And He said to them, "What do you wish that I should do for you?"

And they said to Him, "Grant to us that we may sit, one on Thy right hand, and one on Thy left, in Thy Kingdom."

But Jesus said to them, "Ye know not what ye are asking. Are ye able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be immersed with the immersion that I am immersed with?"

And they said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink ye shall drink; and the immersion with which I am immersed shall ye be immersed; 40 but to sit on My right hand, or on My left, is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." 41 And the ten, hearing it, began to be much displeased with James and John.

And Jesus, calling them to Him, saith to them, "Ye know that those thinking to rule over the gentiles lord it over them; and their great ones exercise authority over them; 43 but it is not so among you; but whosoever wishes to become great among you shall be your minister; 44 and whosoever wishes to be first among you shall be servant of all: 45 for even the Son of Man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his soul a ransom for many."
