John 19:31-37 - Jesus' Side Pierced

³¹ Now, as it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies remaining on the cross during the sabbath (for that sabbath-day was a great day), the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed. ³² So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man and of the other man who had been crucified along with him; ³³ but when they came to Jesus and saw he was dead already, they did not break his legs; ³⁴ only, one of the soldiers pricked his side with a lance, and out came blood and water in a moment. ³⁵ He who saw it has borne witness (his witness is true; God knows he is telling the truth), that you may believe. ³⁶ For this took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, Not a bone of him will be broken. ³⁷ And another scripture also says, They shall look on him whom they have impaled.
