John 11:1-16 - Lazarus Dies

A CERTAIN man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister. 2 It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hairs, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 Then the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.

But Jesus hearing it said, This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it. 5 And Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6 When, therefore, he heard that he was sick, he continued in the place where he was two days. 7 Then after that he said to the disciples, Let us go again into Judea.

The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews lately sought to stone you, and do you go there again?

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours of the day? and if one walks in the day he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world; 10 but if he walks in the night he stumbles, because the light is not in it. 11 He said these things, and after this he said to them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go that I may awake him.

Then they said to him, Lord, if he has fallen asleep he will recover.

But Jesus spoke of his death; but they thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep. 14 Then Jesus, therefore, said to them plainly, Lazarus has died; 15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe; but let us go to him.

Then Thomas, who is called The twin, said to the fellow disciples, Let us go also, that we may die with him.
