Matthew 9:9-13 - Matthew Called To Follow Jesus
9 As Jesus moved on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the toll booth [i.e., collecting taxes]. He said to him, "Become my follower." And he got up and followed Him.
10 And so it happened, as Jesus was having a meal at Matthew's house, a number of [other] tax collectors and worldly people came to sit down with Him and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this they said to His disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and worldly people?"
12 When Jesus heard this, He said, "People who are healthy do not need a doctor; but [only] sick people do. 13 Go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy and not [only] sacrifice.' For I did not come to call righteous people [to be my followers] but sinners."
