Matthew 22:15-22 - Paying Taxes To Caesar
15 Then the Pharisees, going, took counsel how they might ensnare Him in speech. 16 And they send to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that Thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one; for Thou dost not look into the face of men: 17 tell us, therefore, what thinkest Thou: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?"
18 But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, "Why are ye tempting Me, hypocrites? 19 Show me the tribute-coin." And they brought Him a denary. 20 And He saith to them, "Whose is this image and inscription?"
21 They say to Him, "Caesar's." Then saith He to them, "Render, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God." 22 And, hearing it, they wondered: and, leaving Him, they went away.
13 And they send to Him some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they may entrap Him in speech. 14 And, coming, they say to Him, "Teacher, we know that Thou art true, and carest not for any one; for Thou lookest not into the face of men, but in truth teachest the way of God. Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? 15 Shall we give, or shall we not give?" But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why are ye tempting Me? Bring Me a denary, that I may see it." 16 And they brought it. And He saith to them, "Whose is this image and inscription?" And they said to Him, "Caesar's."
17 And Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God." And they wondered exceedingly at Him.
20 And, watching Him, they sent forth spies, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of His speech, so as to deliver Him up to the rule and the authority of the governor. 21 And they asked Him, saying, "Teacher, we know that Thou sayest and teachest rightly, and regardest no person, but teachest the way of God in truth. 22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?"
23 But, perceiving their craftiness, He said to them, 24 "Show Me a denary. Whose image and inscription has it?" And, answering; they said, "Caesar's."
25 And He said to them, "Then, render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
26 And they were not able to lay hold of any saying of His before the people; and, marvelling at His answer, they were silent.
