Matthew 12:1-8 - Plucking Grain On The Sabbath

¹ At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the grain field; and his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the ears of grain, and to eat. ² But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, your disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.

³ But he said unto them, Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and they that were with him; ⁴ How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the showbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them who were with him, but only for the priests? ⁵ Or have you not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? ⁶ But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. ⁷ But if you had known what this means, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the guiltless. ⁸ For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

²³ And it came to pass, that he went through the grain fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. ²⁴ And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?

²⁵ And he said unto them, Have you never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, he, and they that were with him? ²⁶ How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the showbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to them who were with him? ²⁷ And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: ²⁸ Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

¹ And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the grainfields; and his disciples plucked the ears of grain, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. ² And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do you that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

³ And Jesus answering them said, Have you not read so much as this, what David did, when he was hungry, and they who were with him; ⁴ How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the showbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat, but for the priests alone? ⁵ And he said unto them, The Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
