Matthew 26:36-46 - The Prayer In Gethsemane

Matthew 26:36-46

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with me." 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, "O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will."

40 Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, so that you will not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, "O my Father, if this cup cannot pass away unless I drink it, your will be done." 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

44 So he left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."

Mark 14:32-42

32 They went to a place which was called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I pray." 33 And he took Peter, James and John with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; stay here, and watch." 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me; yet not what I will, but what you will."

37 Then he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And when he came again, he found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer him. 41 Then he came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us go; see, my betrayer is at hand."

Luke 22:39-46

39 He came out, and went to the Mount of Olives, as was his custom, and his disciples followed him. 40 When he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done."

43 An angel appeared to him from heaven, and strengthened him. 44 And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. 45 When he rose from prayer, and came to his disciples, he found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 He said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation."
