Matthew 8:18-22 - Would-Be Followers

Matthew 8:18-22

18 And Jesus seeing great multitudes around him commanded them to go away to the other side. 19 And a certain scribe came and said to him, Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.

20 And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of heaven have places of shelter, but the Son of man has not where to lay his head.

21 Another of the disciples said to him, Lord, permit me first to go away and bury my father.

22 But Jesus said to him, Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.

Luke 9:57-62

57 And as they were traveling on the way, one said to him, I will follow you wherever you go.

58 And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of heaven places of shelter; but the Son of man has not where to lay his head. 59 And he said to another, Follow me. And he said, Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.

60 But he said to him, Let the dead bury their dead, but do you go and proclaim abroad the kingdom of God.

61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow you, but permit me first to bid farewell to those in my house.

62 But Jesus said, No man putting his hand on the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
