For a woman to be barren was accounted a severe punishment among the Jews (Ge 16:2; 30:1-23; 1Sa 1:6,27; Isa 47:9; 49:21; Lu 1:25). Instances of barrenness are noticed (Ge 11:30; 25:21; 29:31; Jg 13:2-3; Lu 1:7,36).

But Sarai was barren. She had no child.

And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. And his wife was barren and did not bear. And the Angel of Jehovah appeared to the woman and said to her, Behold now, you are barren and do not bear. But you shall conceive and bear a son.
But these two things shall come to you in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood. They shall come on you in their fullness for the multitude of your sorceries, and for the great power of your enchantments.

And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren. And both were advanced in their days.
So the Lord has dealt with me in the days in which He looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
And behold, your cousin Elizabeth also conceived a son in her old age. And this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
