1. A brave soldier from Kabzeel in Judah (2Sa 23:20 ff.), captain of David's bodyguard (2Sa 8:18; 20:23). He became a partisan of Solomon's and carried' the mighty men,' 'the Cherethites and Pelethites,' with him (1Ki 1:7-8,38). He played an important role in the young king's coronation (1Ki 1:38,44), and was subsequently ordered to dispatch Joab, whose place as commander-in-chief he then filled (1Ki 2:28-35). 2. One of the thirty who formed the second class of David's heroes (2Sa 23:22). He came from Pirathon in Mt. Ephraim (2Sa 23:30, cf. Jg 12:15). 1Ch 27:14 assigns to him the command of the course for the eleventh month, with twenty-four thousand Ephraimites under him. 3. Some ten obscure persons of this name appear in 1Ch 4:36; 15:18,20,24; 16:5-6; 2Ch 20:14; 31:13; Ezr 10:25,30,35,43; Eze 11:1,13.

And when Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite had judged Israel eight years, he died and was buried in Pirathon, the land of Ephraim in the mount of the Amalekites.
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were chief rulers.
And Joab was over all the host of Israel. And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites.

And their blood return upon the head of Joab and on the head of his seed forever. And prosperity be unto David, and unto his seed, and unto his house, and unto his seat, of the LORD forever." And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and smote him and slew him and buried him in his own house in the wilderness. And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host, and put Zadok the priest in the room of Abiathar.
And with them their brethren of the second degree: Zachariah, Ben, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Uri, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah; Obededom and Jeiel, porters.
And Zachariah, Uzziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah sang with psalteries on an Alamoth.
And Shebaniah, Jehoshaphat, Nathaniel, Amasai, Zachariah, Benaiah and Eliezer, priests, were blowers with trumpets before the Ark of God. And Obededom and Jehiah were keepers of the door of the Ark.

Among the children of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, Benaiah.
Moreover, the spirit of the LORD lift me up, and brought me unto the east port of the LORD's house. And behold, there were twenty five men under the door: among whom I saw Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, the rulers of the people.
Now when I preached, Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down upon my face, and cried with a loud voice, "O LORD God, wilt thou then utterly destroy all the remnant in Israel?"
