an adviser (Pr 11:14; 15:22), a king's state counsellor (2Sa 15:12). Used once of the Messiah (Isa 9:6). In Mr 15:43, Lu 23:50, the word probably means a member of the Jewish Sanhedrim.

This is the spelling in modern editions of the AV. In the ed. of 1611 it is 'counseller,' except in Ezr 8:25; Pr 12:20; 15:22, where the spelling is 'counsellour.' The word is used mostly of a king's counsellor, or more generally of one who gives counsel. But in Da 3:2-3 it means a justice; and in Mr 15:43; Lu 23:50, it is used of Joseph of Arimath

1. dethabar. Da 3:2-3.
2. haddabrin. Da 3:24,27; 4:36; 6:7.
3. yeat. Ezr 7:14-15. These three words are Chaldee, and refer to various heathen officials as counsellors of state.
4. yaats, the counsellors in Israel, such as Jonathan, and Ahithophel, David's counsellors, 1Ch 27:32-33. In Isa 9:6 the same word is applied to the Lord Jesus: "His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."
5. ?????????, a member of the Sanhedrim. Mr 15:43; Lu 23:50.
