one "possessed with a devil." In the days of our Lord and his apostles, evil spirits, "daemons," were mysteriously permitted by God to exercise an influence both over the souls and bodies of men, inflicting dumbness (Mt 9:32), blindness (Mt 12:22), epilepsy (Mr 9:17-27), insanity (Mt 8:28; Mr 5:1-5). Daemoniacs are frequently distinguished from those who are afflicted with ordinary bodily maladies (Mr 1:32; 16:17-18; Lu 6:17-18). The daemons speak in their own persons (Mt 8:29; Mr 1:23-24; 5:7). This influence is clearly distinguished from the ordinary power of corruption and of temptation over men. In the daemoniac his personality seems to be destroyed, and his actions, words, and even thoughts to be overborne by the evil spirit (Mark, l.c.; Ac 19:15).

And he having come to the other side, to the region of the Gergesenes, there met him two demoniacs, coming forth out of the tombs, very fierce, so that no one was able to pass over by that way, and lo, they cried out, saying, 'What -- to us and to thee, Jesus, Son of God? didst thou come hither, before the time, to afflict us?'
And as they are coming forth, lo, they brought to him a man dumb, a demoniac,

and one out of the multitude answering said, 'Teacher, I brought my son unto thee, having a dumb spirit; and wherever it doth seize him, it doth tear him, and he foameth, and gnasheth his teeth, and pineth away; and I spake to thy disciples that they may cast it out, and they were not able.' read more. Jesus having seen that a multitude doth run together, rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, 'Spirit -- dumb and deaf -- I charge thee, come forth out of him, and no more thou mayest enter into him;' and having cried, and rent him much, it came forth, and he became as dead, so that many said that he was dead, but Jesus, having taken him by the hand, lifted him up, and he arose.
'And signs shall accompany those believing these things; in my name demons they shall cast out; with new tongues they shall speak; serpents they shall take up; and if any deadly thing they may drink, it shall not hurt them; on the ailing they shall lay hands, and they shall be well.'
and having come down with them, he stood upon a level spot, and a crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea, and Jerusalem, and the maritime Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their sicknesses, and those harassed by unclean spirits, and they were healed,
and the evil spirit, answering, said, 'Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; and ye -- who are ye?'
