E'ben-e'zer

A stone thus called, signifying 'stone of help,' set up by Samuel, after obtaining victory over the Philistines, as a memorial of the help received from God. 1Sa 4:1; 5:1; 7:12. It would appear in the texts as if the stone had had the name prior to Samuel's thus designating it; but this may be accounted for by the whole account having been written after the stone was so named. The word has become symbolical for the expression "Hitherto hath the Lord helped us."
