El-beth'-el
Name given by Jacob to the place of the altar which he built at Beth-el to God who appeared to him when he fled from Esau. Beth-el signifies 'House of God,' and on his return to that place he received the revelation of God's name, Almighty (compare Ge 32:29), and worshipped the 'God of Beth-el,' "because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother." Ge 35:7.
