When Leah saw that she had ceased to bear, she gave Zilpah her maid to Jacob as a [secondary] wife.

Then Leah said, Victory and good fortune have come; and she named him Gad [fortune].

And Leah said, I am happy, for women will call me blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied); and she named him Asher [happy].

And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's maid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob born to him in Padan-aram.

The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.

Gad -- "a raiding troop shall raid him, but he shall raid at their heels and assault them [victoriously].

And of Gad he said: Blessed is He Who enlarges Gad! Gad lurks like a lioness, and tears the arm, yes, the crown of the head.

From Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and slew them.
