dread, a descendant of Canaan, and the ancestor of the Hittites (Ge 10:18; De 7:1), who dwelt in the vicinity of Hebron (Ge 23:3,7). The Hittites were a Hamitic race. They are called "the sons of Heth" (Ge 23:3,5,7,10,16,18,20).

Son of Canaan, Ham's son; from whence sprung the Hittites, occupying the hill country of Judah near Hebron. But the race enlarged its borders so that they with the Amorites represent all Canaan (Jos 1:4; Eze 16:3, "thy father was an Amorite, thy mother an Hittite".) See Ge 23:3-20. Esau's marriage to one of the daughters of Heth "grieved the mind" of Isaac and Rebekah, for their morals were lax and their worship idolatrous (Ge 26:34-35; 27:46). In Solomon's and in Joram's times there were independent Hittite kings (1Ki 10:29; 2Ki 7:6). In the Egyptian monuments they are called the Kheta, who made themselves masters of Syria.

A [piece of] land [worth] four hundred shekels of silver--what [is] that between me and you? Bury your dead." Then Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed for Ephron the silver that he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver {at the merchants' current rate}. So the field of Ephron which [was] in the Machpelah, which [was] near Mamre--the field and the cave which [was] in it, with all the trees that [were] in the field, which [were] within all its surrounding boundaries--{passed} to Abraham as a property in the presence of the Hittites, with respect to all [who were] entering the gate of his city. And thus afterward Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah near Mamre; that [is] Hebron, in the land of Canaan And the field and the cave which [was] in it {passed} to Abraham as {a burial site} from the Hittites.
And [when] Esau was forty years old he took as wife Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite. And {they made life bitter} for Isaac and Rebekah.
Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I loathe my life because of the Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from Hittite women like these, from the {native women}, {what am I living for}?"
From the wilderness {and the Lebanon}, up to the great river, the river Euphrates, all of the land of the Hittites, and up to {the great sea in the west}, will be your territory.
A chariot went up and went out from Egypt at six hundred silver [shekels] and a horse at a hundred and fifty. So it was for all the kings of the Hittites and for the kings of Aram; by their hand they were exported.
