David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the Wilderness of Ziph in the wood [at Horesh]. And Jonathan, Saul's son, rose and went into the wood to David [at Horesh] and strengthened his hand in God.

And the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. And David remained in the wood [at Horesh], and Jonathan went to his house.

In that day will their [Syria's and Israel's] strong cities be like the forsaken places in the wood and on the mountaintop, as they [the Amorites and the Hivites] forsook their [cities] because of the children of Israel; and there will be desolation.

Behold, [I will liken you to] Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon, with fair branches and with forestlike shade and of high stature, with its top among the thick boughs [even among the clouds].
