tamar. This is a lofty tree without lateral branches, with a large tuft of leafy branches clustering at the top several feet long. At the base of the branches grow the dates in large clusters. Ex 15:27; Nu 33:9; Jg 4:5; Cant. 7:7, 8; Jer 10:5; Joe 1:12. The branches were used to construct the booths at the feast of tabernacles. Le 23:40; Ne 8:15; and were strewn in the path on the Lord's last entrance into Jerusalem. Joh 12:13. There were many representations of palm-trees in the decorations of the temple, as there will also be in the future temple. 1Ki 6:29-35; 7:36; 2Ch 3:5; Eze 40:16-37; 41:18-26. The palm-tree is used as an emblem of fertility in Ps 92:12; some trees will bear yearly more than a hundred-weight of dates and for a period of about seventy years. The palm-branches are a token of rest and peace after sorrow. Re 7:9. The palm is the Phoenix dactylifera.

And they came to Elim, where were twelve springs of water, and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there by the waters.

And, behold, a gate toward the south. And he measured the posts of it and the arches of it according to these measures. And there were windows in it, and in the arches of it round about, like those windows: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth twenty-five cubits. And there were seven steps to go up to it, and the arches of it were before them. And it had palm trees, one on this side, and another on that side, upon the posts of it. And there was a gate to the inner court toward the south. And he measured from gate to gate toward the south a hundred cubits. Then he brought me to the inner court by the south gate. And he measured the south gate according to these measures, and the little chambers of it, and the posts of it, and the arches of it, according to these measures. And there were windows in it and in the arches of it round about. It was fifty cubits long, and twenty-five cubits broad. And there were arches round about, twenty-five cubits long, and five cubits broad. And the arches of it were toward the outer court, and palm trees were upon the posts of it. And the ascent to it had eight steps. And he brought me into the inner court toward the east. And he measured the gate according to these measures, and the little chambers of it, and the posts of it, and the arches of it, according to these measures. And there were windows in it and in the arches of it round about. It was fifty cubits long, and twenty-five cubits broad. And the arches of it were toward the outer court, and palm trees were upon the posts of it, on this side, and on that side. And the ascent to it had eight steps. And he brought me to the north gate. And he measured [it] according to these measures, the little chambers of it, the posts of it, and the arches of it. And there were windows in it round about. And it was made with cherubim and palm trees, and a palm tree was between cherub and cherub. And every cherub had two faces, so that there was the face of a man toward the palm tree on the one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side, made through all the house round about. read more. The vine is withered, and the fig tree languishes. The pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field are withered. For joy has withered away from the sons of men.
