1. The second son of Jacob and Leah (Ge 29:33 Jahwist). By Redactor he, together with Levi, is closely related to Dinah, she being a full sister (Ge 29:34). From Ge 30:20 (Elohist) we learn that he had five full brothers, but we are not told how many other sisters or half-sisters he had. Jahwist (Ge 37:35) speaks of 'all' Jacob's 'daughters,' but their names are nowhere recorded (cf. Ge 46:7 Priestly Narrative). Jahwist, who is specially inclined to etymologizing (see Revised Version margin of Ge 3:20; 4:1,25; 5:29; 11:9; 16:11,14 etc.), connects the name, as in the case of Reuben, with Jacob's 'hatred' of Leah: 'Because Jahweh hath heard (sh

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bore a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, has appointed me another child instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed.
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confuse the language of all the earth: and from there did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Ishmael; because the LORD has heard your affliction.
Therefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Because the LORD has heard that I was hated, he has therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.
And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Because the LORD has heard that I was hated, he has therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon. And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined to me, because I have borne him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
And Leah said, God has endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.
And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.
His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his descendants brought he with him into Egypt.
Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.
And when king Arad the Canaanite, who dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the road to Atharim; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners. And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities. read more. And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah. And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Sea of Reeds, to go around the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was greatly discouraged because of the way. And the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loathes this worthless bread. And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died.

Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon: for the portion of the children of Judah was too much for them: therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within their inheritance.
