i.e., as known in Roman history, Tiberius Claudius Nero, only mentioned in Lu 3:1. He was the stepson of Augustus, whom he succeeded on the throne, A.D. 14. He was noted for his vicious and infamous life. In the fifteenth year of his reign John the Baptist entered on his public ministry, and under him also our Lord taught and suffered. He died A.D. 37. He is frequently referred to simply as "Caesar" (Mt 22:17,21; Mr 12:14,16-17; Lu 20:22,24-25; 23:2; Joh 19:12,15).

Tell us, therefore, how thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?"
They said unto him, "Caesar's." Then said he unto them, "Give therefore to Caesar, that which is Caesar's: and give unto God, that which is God's."

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius the Emperor, Pontius Pilate being leftenant of Jewry, and Herod being Tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip Tetrarch in Ituraea, and in the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the Tetrarch of Abilene:
Show me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it?" They answered and said, "Caesar's." And he said unto them, "Give then unto Caesar, that which belongeth unto Cesar: And to God, that which pertaineth to God."
And they began to accuse him saying, "We have found this fellow, perverting the people and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar: and saying that he is Christ, a King."
And from thenceforth sought Pilate means to loose him: but the Jews cried, saying, "If thou let him go, thou art not Caesar's friend. For whosoever maketh himself a King, is against Caesar."
They cried, "Away with him, away with him; Crucify him." Pilate said unto them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The high priests answered, "We have no King but Caesar."

Son of Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia, his name in full being the same as his father's. He was step-son of Augustus, and was the second emperor of Rome. There is only an incidental reference to him under this name in the N.T.
