for he hath subjected all things to him. but when it is said all things are subjected, it is plain that he is to be excepted, who did subject all things to him. and when all things shall be reduced under subjection to him, then shall the son also himself be subject to him that put all things under his subjection, that God may be all in all.
this was Jesus, who while he was in a mortal body, having offered up prayers and supplications, with strong cries, and with tears, to him that was able to save him from that death, was heard so as to be delivered from his fear; for tho' he was the son of God, yet he found by his own sufferings what it was to obey,
wherefore at his appearing in publick, he saith, "sacrifice and offering thou wouldst not, but a body hast thou prepared me: in burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure: then said I, lo I come, as in the volume of the book it is written of me, to do thy will, O God."
for the same temper of mind ought to be in you as was in Christ Jesus: who tho' he was the image of God, did not affect to appear with divine majesty, but divested himself thereof, by assuming the form of a servant: being made in the likeness of men,
as the church then is subordinate to Christ, so let women be to their husbands upon all occasions.
for he has subjected all things to him, and constituted him supreme head of the church, which is his body, a work compleatly finished in all its parts.
he himself is the head of the church, which is his body. he is the prince, the first-born from the dead, that in all things he might be chief.

whereas, he that attentively considers the perfect law of liberty, and is attach'd thereto, he is not a forgetful hearer, but reduces it to practice, and his conduct is crown'd with hapiness.

Confide in your guides, and be respectful: that they who are vigilant, as being accountable for your souls, may discharge themselves with cheerfulness, and not with anxiety, which would be to your prejudice.

wherefore you ought to submit not only from an apprehension of punishment, but from a principle of conscience. for this is the reason why you also pay tribute, because under God, they are continually attending upon the publick administration. render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due, custom to whom custom, reverence to whom reverence, honour to whom honour.

Let the married women be subservient to their husbands, that if they happen to disbelieve the gospel, they may be gain'd by the instructive conduct of their wives,
Children, obey your christian parents: for this is the law. the first commandment with a promise annexed, is, "honour thy father and mother, that it may be well with thee, and thou mayst be long-lived on the earth."
being under tutors and guardians, 'till the time prefix'd by his father.
children, obey your parents upon all occasions, for that is graceful in a christian.
Servants, be obedient to your legal masters, with awful reverence and sincerity of heart, as unto Christ: not doing your work meerly out of regard to their presence or their pleasure, but as the servants of Christ, in hearty obedience to the will of God: serve them with affection, as if it was to the Lord,read more.
and not to men: considering that whatever good any man doth, he shall be rewarded for it by the Lord, whether he be a slave or free.
servants, be entirely obedient to those, whom the laws have made your masters, and not meerly out of regard to their observation, as designing only to please men, but from a principle of integrity, as fearing God: and whatever you do, do it heartily, as serving the Lord, and not men: knowing that as you are the servants of Christ our Lord, you shall receive from him the inheritance for your reward.
Exhort servants to be obedient to their masters, to be entirely obsequious without grumbling. not to pilfer, but to show the strictest fidelity; that they may do honour to the doctrine of God our saviour in all things.
You that are servants, be subject to your masters with all reverence: not only to such as are kind and gentle,
As for you that are young, be you submissive to those of a more advanc'd age: and do you all of you pay a becoming deference to one another: be cloak'd with humility, for " God opposes the proud, and shows favour to the humble."
You husband, love your spouse, even as Christ loved the church, and laid down his life for her: to sanctify and purify her by the ablution of his word, that he himself might make her appear illustrious to his own eye, a church without spot, or any thing like a defect; so as to be holy and irreprehensible.read more.
in like manner ought men to love their wives, as their own bodies: "he that loves his wife, loveth himself." no man was ever yet averse to his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, as the Lord doth the church: of which we are the several parts constituting his body. the scripture says, "for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be united to his wife, and they two shall be as one." these words contain a very mystical sense, I mean in reference to Christ and the church. wherefore let every one of you without exception, love his wife even as himself; and let the wife respect her husband.
and you fathers don't exasperate your children: but instruct them in the discipline and institution of the Lord.
I exhort you therefore, above all things, to present supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving for all men: for kings, and for all that are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in the practice of all piety and virtue;
I address myself to you pastors, as being a pastor myself, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and as one who is to partake of the glory, that shall hereafter be made manifest; to exhort you to feed the flock of God, which is among you: to take care of it, voluntarily, without reluctance, not from any view to sordid gain, but out of real affection; not to domineer over the laity, but to be examples for their imitation;read more.
