But when he heard that, he said, They who are well do not need a physician, but they who are sick. But go ye and learn what this meaneth: "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice." For I came not to call righteous men, but sinners.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, whose will is that all men should be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth.

For the Law but shadowing forth the good things to come, and not having the very image of the things, can never with the same sacrifices which they offer year by year continually make those who come with them perfect. For in that case would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshippers, having been once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins? For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins. Wherefore, when he cometh into the world, he saith: "Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body didst thou prepare for me; in whole burntofferings and sacrifices for sin thou hadst no pleasure.
