And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities and went out to battle.

And Amaziah gathered Judah together and made captains over thousands and over hundreds in the houses of their fathers throughout all Judah and Benjamin. And he numbered them from twenty years and above, and found them three hundred thousand lusty men able to go to battle, and that could handle spear and shield. And he hired thereto a hundred thousand fighting men out of Israel, for a hundred talents of silver.


Wherefore Hanun took David's servants and shaved off the one half of every man's beard and cut off their garments even in the middle, even hard by the buttocks of them and sent them away.

and reigned in mount Hermon, and in Salecah, and throughout all Bashan, unto the borders, of the Geshurites, and the Maacathites and half Gilead, unto the borders of Sihon king of Heshbon.

Then came the Syrians of Damascus to help Hadadezer king of Zobah. And David slew of the Syrians twenty two thousand,

And when Thou king of Hamath, heard how David had beat all the host of Hadadezer king of Zobah,

When Joab saw that the front of the battle was before and after, he chose of all the best of Israel and put them in array against the Syrians. And the rest of the people he delivered in the hand of Abishai his brother, which put them in array against the children of Ammon. And he said, "If the Syrians overcome me, then succor me. But if the children of Ammon be too good for thee, I will come and succor thee. Quite thee like a man, and let us fight lustily for our people and for the cities of our God. And the LORD do what seemeth best in his eyes." And forthwith Joab proceeded, and the people that was with him, into battle against the Syrians: which fled before him. And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. And so Joab returned from the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.

And the children of Ammon came out and put them in array to battle before the gate of the city. And the kings that were come kept them by themselves in the field. When Joab saw that the front of the battle was before him and after, he chose out of all the youth of Israel and put them in array against the Syrians. And the rest of the people he delivered unto Abishai his brother, that they should put themselves in array against the children of Ammon, and said, "If the Syrians be too strong for me, succor me, and if the children of Ammon be too good for thee, I will help thee. Pluck up thine heart and let us play the men for our people's sake, and for the cities of our God, and the LORD to do what seemeth him best." And Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh to the Syrians, to fight, and they fled before him. And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they ran away likewise, from Abishai his brother and gat them into the city. And Joab came to Jerusalem. And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse of Israel, they sent messengers and fetched out the Syrians that are beyond the river with Shophach the Captain of the host of Hadadezer before them. Which, when it was told David, he gathered all Israel, and went over Jordan and went and set upon them. And David put himself in array against the Syrians, and they fought with him. But the Syrians fled before Israel, and David destroyed of the Syrians seven thousand chariots, and slew forty thousand footmen and killed Shophach the Captain of the host. And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were put to the worse of Israel, they made peace with David and served him. Neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon anymore.

And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank unto David, they sent and hired the sons of Bethrehob of the Syrians of Zobah: twenty thousand footmen; and of king Maacah: a thousand men; and of Ishtob: twelve thousand men. And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of strong men. And the children of Ammon came out and waged battle before the gate, and the Syrians of Zobah, of Rehob, Ishtob and Maacah were by themselves in the fields. read more.

And when it was showed David, he gathered all Israel and passed over Jordan and came to Helam: where the Syrians put themselves in array against David and fought with him. Howbeit, the Syrians fled before Israel. And David destroyed seven hundred chariots of them and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of his host, that he there died. And when all the kings that were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with them and served them. And so the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
