And it came to pass the same night, that the word of LORD came to Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus says LORD, Shall thou build a house for me to dwell in? For I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the sons of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. In all places in which I have walked with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, Why have ye not built for me a house of cedar? Now therefore thus thou shall say to my servant David, Thus says LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, that thou should be prince over my people, over Israel. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men, but my loving kindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul whom I put away before thee. And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure forever before thee; thy throne shall be established forever.
