The Emims dwelt therein in times past; which were a great strong people, and high of stature as the Anakims. Which also were taken for Giants, like as the Anakims: And the Moabites called them Emims.

a people that was great, many and tall, as the Anakims. But the LORD destroyed them before the Ammonites, and they cast them out and they dwelt there in their stead:


And he went up thence, to the inhabiters of Debir, whose name in the old time was Kiriathsepher. And Caleb said, "He that smiteth Kiriathsepher and taketh it: to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife. And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb took it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

And Caleb said, "He that smiteth Kiriathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife." And Othniel the son of Kenaz Caleb's younger brother took it: to whom he gave Achsah his daughter to wife,


And there we saw also giants, the children of Anak which are of the giants. And we seemed in our sight as it were grasshoppers and so we did in their sight."

And the multitude cried out, and the people wept throughout that night,


and they ascended unto the south and came unto Hebron: where Ahiman was, and Sheshai and Talmai; the sons of Anak. Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.

And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh was there a part given among the children of Judah, by the mouth of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Kiriatharba father of Anak which city is called Hebron.


And they gave them Kiriatharba of the father of Anak, which is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs of the same round about it.

And the name of Hebron was called in old time, Kiriatharba, which was a huge man among the Anakims. And the land ceased from war.


How shall we go up? Our brethren have discouraged our hearts, saying the people is greater and taller than we, and the cities are great and walled even up to heaven, and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.'


and people great and tall, even the children of the Anakims, which thou knowest and of whom thou hast heard say, 'Who is able to stand before the children of Anak?'


And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh was there a part given among the children of Judah, by the mouth of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Kiriatharba father of Anak which city is called Hebron. And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the sons begotten of Anak.


And that same season, Joshua went and destroyed the Anakims out of the mountains, and out of Hebron, Debir, and Anab, and out of all the mountains of Judah, and out of all the mountains of Israel. And Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities, so that there was not one Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod, there remained of them.


And the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said unto him, "Thou knowest what the LORD said unto Moses the man of God, about me and thee in Kadesh Barnea. Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land. And I brought them word again even as I thought in mine heart. Nevertheless, my brethren that went up with me discouraged the hearts of the people. But I followed the LORD my God even unto the end. read more.
And Moses sware the same season saying, 'The land whereon thy feet have trodden, shall be thine inheritance and thy children forever because thou hast followed the LORD my God continually.' And now behold, the LORD hath kept me lusty, as he said, this forty and five years, even since the LORD spake unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness. And now see I am this day four score and five years: and yet am as strong at this time, as I was when Moses sent me: look how strong I was then, so strong I am now, to war and to do all manner of things. Now, therefore, give me this mountain which the LORD at that time promised, for thou heardest at the time, how the Anakims were there, and how the cities were great and walled. I trust the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out as the LORD said." And Joshua blessed Caleb the son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron to inherit. And Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, unto this day: because he followed the LORD God of Israel perpetually.
