I stood between Jehovah and you at that time, to declare to you the word of Jehovah. You were afraid because of the fire. So you would not go up onto the mountain. He said:

The people heard the thunder and the trumpet blast. They saw the lightning and the smoking mountain. They trembled with fear and stood at a distance. They said to Moses: If you speak to us, we will listen. However, we are afraid that if God speaks to us, we will die. Moses responded: Do not be afraid.
