And he spoke a parable to them, that they ought always to pray, and not to become weary, saying: There was in a certain city a judge, who neither feared God nor regarded man. And there was a widow in that city, and she came to him, and said: Avenge me on my opponent at law. read more.
And for a while he refused. But afterward he said within himself: Though I fear not God, nor regard man, yet, because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said: Hear what the unjust judge says; and will not God avenge his elect, who cry to him day and night, though he delay long in respect to them? I say to you, that he will avenge them speedily. Yet, when the Son of man comes, will he find the faith on the earth? And he spoke this parable to some, who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and who despised others. Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: God, I thank thee that I am not as other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying: God, be merciful to me a sinner. I say to you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For every one that exalts himself, shall be humbled; but he that humbles himself, shall be exalted.
