And I tarried in the mount, even as at the first time forty days and forty nights, and the LORD hearkened unto me at that time also, so that the LORD would not destroy thee.
So he said he would have destroyed them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in that gap; to turn away his wrathful indignation, lest he should destroy them.

And the children of Levi did as Moses had said. And there were slain of the people the same day, about three thousand men. Then Moses said, "Fill your hands unto the LORD this day, every man upon his son and upon his brother: to bring upon you a blessing this day."
