When you sit down to eat with a ruler, consider carefully what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you possess a large appetite. Do not crave that ruler's delicacies, for that food is deceptive.

Do not honor yourself before the king, and do not stand in the place of great men; for it is better for him to say to you, "Come up here," than to put you lower before a prince, whom your eyes have seen.

Do not eat the food of a stingy person, do not crave his delicacies; for he is like someone calculating the cost in his mind. "Eat and drink," he says to you, but his heart is not with you; you will vomit up the little bit you have eaten, and will have wasted your pleasant words.

Whenever you enter a house, first say, 'May peace be on this house!' And if a peace-loving person is there, your peace will remain on him, but if not, it will return to you. Stay in that same house, eating and drinking what they give you, for the worker deserves his pay. Do not move around from house to house.

Then when Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. He said to them, "When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, because a person more distinguished than you may have been invited by your host. But when you are invited, go and take the least important place, so that when your host approaches he will say to you, 'Friend, move up here to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all who share the meal with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
