And at that time there was a great persecution against the church, which was in Jerusalem. And they were all scattered abroad through the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. And devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him. But Saul made havock of the church, entring into every house, and haling men and women, committed them to prison.
But there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called that of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spake. And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and coming upon him, dragged him away, and brought him to the council, And set up false witnesses who said, This man ceaseth not to speak words against the holy place and the law. For we have heard him say, That Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and change the rites which Moses delivered us. And all that were sitting in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face, as the face of an angel.

Then they cried with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord, And casting him out of the city, stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, invoking and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
