When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God's justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God's purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.

Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?”

They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" John answered them saying, "I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.

These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Now when John, while imprisoned, heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his disciples

His disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus.

John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they *came and *said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

And they said to Him, “The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink.”

The disciples of John reported to him about all these things.

Therefore there arose a discussion on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about purification.
