These are the nations which the LORD left to tempt Israel, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan. Only, for the learning of the generation of the children of Israel, which before knew nothing of war, he left the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Cananites, the Sidonians, the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon: even from mount Baalhermon unto Hamath.

Then the children of Joseph said again, "The hill will not be gotten of us: for all the Cananites that dwell in the low country have chariots of iron, and so have they that inhabit Bethshean, and the towns of the same, and they also that dwell in the valley of Jezreel." And Joshua answered the house of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, "Ye be much people and have great power and shall not therefore have one lot. But the hill shall be yours, for it is a wood country and ye shall bring it to fashion, and it shall be yours even unto the ends of it, for ye shall be able to cast out the Cananites for all their iron chariots and for all they be so strong."

After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, "Who shall go up first unto the Cananites to fight against them?" And the LORD said, "Judah shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands." And Judah went up, and the LORD delivered the Cananites and Perezites into their hands. And they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men. And they found Adonibezek in Bezek. And Caleb said, "He that smiteth Kiriathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife." And the children of Benjamin did not cast out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem, but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day. And in like manner the house of Joseph went up to Bethel and the LORD with them, and the house of Joseph searched out Bethel which before time was called Luz. And the spies saw a man come out of the city and they said unto him, "Show us the way into the city, and we will show thee mercy." And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day. Neither did Manasseh expel Bethshean with her towns, neither Taanach with her towns, neither the inhabiters of Dor with her towns, neither the inhabiters of Ibleam with her towns, neither the inhabiters of Megiddo with her towns, and so the Cananites went to and dwelt in the said land. But as soon as Israel was waxed mighty, they put the Cananites to tribute: but expelled them not. In like manner Ephraim expelled not the Cananites that dwelt in Gezer, but the Cananites dwelt still in Gezer among them. Neither did Zebulun expel the inhabiters of Kitron, neither the inhabiters of Nahalol; but the Cananites dwelt among them and became tributaries. Neither did Asher cast out the inhabiters of Acco, neither the inhabiters of Sidon, of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, nor of Rehob, but the Asherites dwelt among the Cananites the inhabiters of the land, and drave them not out. Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabiters of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabiters of Bethanath, but dwelt amongst the Cananites the inhabiters of the land. Nevertheless the inhabiters of Bethshemesh, and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.

And the children of Ephraim took their coasts by kindreds. And the coasts of their inheritance eastward were, Atarothaddar, even unto Bethhoron the upper, and went out westward to Michmethath on the north side, and compassed eastward unto Taanathshiloh, and past it on the east side unto Janoah, and went down from Janoah to Ataroth and Naarah, and met at Jericho, and went out at Jordan. read more.
And their borders went from Tappuah westward unto the river Kanah, and the ends were the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim in their kindreds, and the bordering cities of the children of Ephraim, lie among the inheritance of the children of Manasseh: even all the cities with their villages.

And the coasts descended unto the river Kanah on whose south side Ephraim hath cities among the cities of Manasseh. For the coasts of Manasseh were on the north side of the river and the ends of them was the sea: so that the south pertained to Ephraim, and the north to Manasseh, and the sea is his border. And they met together in Asher northward, and in Issachar eastward.

And their possession and habitation was Bethel and the towns that belonged thereto, and unto the east of Naaran, and on the west side of Gezer with the towns thereof, and Shechem with the towns of the same, and Ayyah with her towns, and along by the borders of the children of Manasseh, Bethshean with her towns, Taanach with her towns, Megiddo with her towns and Dor with her towns. In those dwelt the children of Joseph the son of Israel.

For Gideon had sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim saying, "Come down against the Midianites and take from them the waters both of Bethabara and also of Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and came down and took the waters, both of Bethabara and also of Jordan.
