Now these are the nations that Jehovah left to test the Israelites who had not known all the wars of Canaan. He did this to teach warfare to the generations of the children of Israel who had not had previous battle experience. Those left in the land were the five Philistine cities, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the Lebanon Mountains from Mount Baal Hermon as far as Hamath Pass.
Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. When the children of Israel were very strong they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor. They did not completely drive them out.
