A man too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot. He looks for a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not topple.

What is an idol worth after the carver is done? It is merely a false god. Why trust a speechless image made by human hands from wood or metal?

It is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. (Isaiah 29:14) Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? This is the wisdom of God that the world through its wisdom did not come to know God. God was well pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
These have, indeed, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body. But these are not of any value against the indulgence of the flesh.
David answered: You come out to fight me with a sword and a spear and a dagger. But I come out to fight you in the name of Jehovah of Hosts. He is the Almighty God of Israel's army. You have insulted him!
A mighty army does not save the king. A warrior is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a false hope for victory. It does not deliver anyone by its great strength.

Jesus told him: Put your sword in its place. Those who take up the sword will perish by the sword.
He who trusts in his riches will fall. The righteous will flourish as a leaf on a branch.
