And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh was there a part given among the children of Judah, by the mouth of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Kiriatharba father of Anak which city is called Hebron. And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the sons begotten of Anak.

Now, therefore, give me this mountain which the LORD at that time promised, for thou heardest at the time, how the Anakims were there, and how the cities were great and walled. I trust the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out as the LORD said."

And the name of Hebron was called in old time, Kiriatharba, which was a huge man among the Anakims. And the land ceased from war.

And they gave Hebron unto Caleb as Moses said. And he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

These are the nations which the LORD left to tempt Israel, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan. Only, for the learning of the generation of the children of Israel, which before knew nothing of war, he left the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Cananites, the Sidonians, the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon: even from mount Baalhermon unto Hamath.

yet the children of Manasseh could not overcome those cities, but the Cananites began to dwell in the same land. Nevertheless, as soon as the children of Israel were waxed strong, they put the Cananites to tribute, but expelled them not. And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, "Why hast thou given us but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing we be much people, and forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed us so?" read more.
And Joshua answered them, "If ye be much people, then get you up to the wood country, and prepare for yourselves there in the land of the Perezites and of the Rephaim, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for you." Then the children of Joseph said again, "The hill will not be gotten of us: for all the Cananites that dwell in the low country have chariots of iron, and so have they that inhabit Bethshean, and the towns of the same, and they also that dwell in the valley of Jezreel." And Joshua answered the house of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, "Ye be much people and have great power and shall not therefore have one lot. But the hill shall be yours, for it is a wood country and ye shall bring it to fashion, and it shall be yours even unto the ends of it, for ye shall be able to cast out the Cananites for all their iron chariots and for all they be so strong."

After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, "Who shall go up first unto the Cananites to fight against them?" And the LORD said, "Judah shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands." Then Judah said unto Simeon his brother, "Come with me into my lot, and let us fight against the Cananites: And I likewise will go with thee into thy lot." And so Simeon went with him. read more.
And Judah went up, and the LORD delivered the Cananites and Perezites into their hands. And they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men. And they found Adonibezek in Bezek. And they fought against him, and slew the Cananites and Perezites. But Adonibezek fled, and they followed after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. Then Adonibezek said, "Three score and ten kings having their thumbs and great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table wherefore as I have done so God hath done to me again." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. The children of Judah fought against Jerusalem and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire. And after that, the children of Judah went even to fight against the Cananites that dwelt in the mountain, in the south, and in the low country. And Judah went unto the Cananites that dwelt in Hebron, which before time was called Kiriatharba. And slew Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. And from thence they went to the inhabiters of Debir, whose name in old time was called Kiriathsepher. And Caleb said, "He that smiteth Kiriathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife." And Othniel the son of Kenaz Caleb's younger brother took it: to whom he gave Achsah his daughter to wife, and as they went she counseled him to ask of her father a field. And then she lighted off her ass, and Caleb said unto her, "What aileth thee?" She said unto him, "Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a southward and a dry land. Give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her springs both above and beneath. And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees, with the children of Judah, into the wilderness of Judah that lieth in the South of Arad, and dwelt among the people. And Judah went and Simeon with him, and they slew the Cananites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it, and called the name of the city Hormah. And Judah took Gaza with the coasts thereof, and Ashkelon with the coasts thereof, and Ekron with the coasts thereof. And the LORD was with Judah that he conquered the mountains, but they could not drive out the inhabiters of the valleys, because they had chariots of iron. And they gave Hebron unto Caleb as Moses said. And he expelled thence the three sons of Anak. And the children of Benjamin did not cast out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem, but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day. And in like manner the house of Joseph went up to Bethel and the LORD with them, and the house of Joseph searched out Bethel which before time was called Luz. And the spies saw a man come out of the city and they said unto him, "Show us the way into the city, and we will show thee mercy." And he showed them the way into the city, and they smote it with the edge of the sword, but let the man and all his household go free. And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day. Neither did Manasseh expel Bethshean with her towns, neither Taanach with her towns, neither the inhabiters of Dor with her towns, neither the inhabiters of Ibleam with her towns, neither the inhabiters of Megiddo with her towns, and so the Cananites went to and dwelt in the said land. But as soon as Israel was waxed mighty, they put the Cananites to tribute: but expelled them not. In like manner Ephraim expelled not the Cananites that dwelt in Gezer, but the Cananites dwelt still in Gezer among them. Neither did Zebulun expel the inhabiters of Kitron, neither the inhabiters of Nahalol; but the Cananites dwelt among them and became tributaries. Neither did Asher cast out the inhabiters of Acco, neither the inhabiters of Sidon, of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, nor of Rehob, but the Asherites dwelt among the Cananites the inhabiters of the land, and drave them not out. Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabiters of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabiters of Bethanath, but dwelt amongst the Cananites the inhabiters of the land. Nevertheless the inhabiters of Bethshemesh, and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.

And the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said unto him, "Thou knowest what the LORD said unto Moses the man of God, about me and thee in Kadesh Barnea. Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land. And I brought them word again even as I thought in mine heart. Nevertheless, my brethren that went up with me discouraged the hearts of the people. But I followed the LORD my God even unto the end. read more.
And Moses sware the same season saying, 'The land whereon thy feet have trodden, shall be thine inheritance and thy children forever because thou hast followed the LORD my God continually.' And now behold, the LORD hath kept me lusty, as he said, this forty and five years, even since the LORD spake unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness. And now see I am this day four score and five years: and yet am as strong at this time, as I was when Moses sent me: look how strong I was then, so strong I am now, to war and to do all manner of things. Now, therefore, give me this mountain which the LORD at that time promised, for thou heardest at the time, how the Anakims were there, and how the cities were great and walled. I trust the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out as the LORD said." And Joshua blessed Caleb the son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron to inherit. And Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, unto this day: because he followed the LORD God of Israel perpetually. And the name of Hebron was called in old time, Kiriatharba, which was a huge man among the Anakims. And the land ceased from war.
