And he went and attached himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his field to feed swine. And he desired to fill his stomach with the carob pods which the swine eat; and no man gave him. And coming to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father abound in bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned to Heaven, and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But while he was yet far off, his father saw him, and had compassion on him, and ran and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned to Heaven, and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Bring out the best robe and put on him; and put a ring on his hand, and sandals on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it; let us eat, and rejoice; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

But while he was thinking of these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, fear not to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit, and she shall bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.


And his disciples James and John seeing it, said, Lord, do you wish us to call fire to come down from heaven and consume them? And he turned around and rebuked them; and they went to another village. (Added verse not retained in Sawyer)

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that every one believing in him may not perish but have eternal life. For God sent not his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world through him might be saved.
