And lo! there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and he was a righteous and devout man, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was upon him; and it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord! now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all the peoples; a light to enlighten the gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. And his father and his mother marveled at what was spoken concerning him. And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that will be spoken against; yea, a sword will pierce through thine own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. And there was Anna, a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel: of the tribe of Asher; she was of great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and she was a widow eightyfour years old, who never left the temple, worshipping with fastings and prayers night and day.
