Luke 23:1 (show verse)

And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

Luke 23:2 (show verse)

And they began to accuse him saying, "We have found this fellow, perverting the people and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar: and saying that he is Christ, a King."

Luke 23:3 (show verse)

And Pilate opposed him, saying, "Art thou the King of the Jews?" He answered him, and said, "Thou sayest it."

Luke 23:4 (show verse)

Then said Pilate to the high priests, and to the people, "I find no fault in this man."

Luke 23:5 (show verse)

And they were the more fierce, saying, "He moveth the people, teaching throughout Jewry, and began at Galilee, even to this place."

Luke 23:6 (show verse)

When Pilate heard mention of Galilee, he asked whether the man were of Galilee.

Luke 23:7 (show verse)

And as soon as he knew that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, which was also at Jerusalem in those days.

Luke 23:8 (show verse)

And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad. For he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him, and trusted to have seen some miracle done by him.

Luke 23:9 (show verse)

Then questioned he with him of many things: But he answered him not one word.

Luke 23:10 (show verse)

The high priests and scribes, stood forth and accused him straightly.

Luke 23:11 (show verse)

And Herod, with his men of war, despised him, and mocked him; And arrayed him in white, and sent him again to Pilate.

Luke 23:12 (show verse)

And the same day, Pilate and Herod were made friends together. For before, they were at variance.

Luke 23:13 (show verse)

And Pilate called together the high priests, and the rulers, and the people,

Luke 23:14 (show verse)

and said unto them, "Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverted the people. And behold, I have examined him before you, and have found no fault in this man, of those things whereof ye accuse him.

Luke 23:15 (show verse)

No, nor yet Herod. For I sent you to him: and lo, nothing worthy of death is done to him.

Luke 23:16 (show verse)

I will therefore chasten him, and let him loose."

Luke 23:17 (show verse)

For of necessity, he must have let one loose unto them at that feast.

Luke 23:18 (show verse)

And all the people cried at once, saying, "Away with him, and deliver to us Barabbas:

Luke 23:19 (show verse)

which for insurrection made in the city, and murder, was cast into prison."

Luke 23:20 (show verse)

Pilate spake again to them, willing to let Jesus loose.

Luke 23:21 (show verse)

And they cried, saying, "Crucify him; Crucify him."

Luke 23:22 (show verse)

He said unto them the third time, "What evil hath he done? I find no cause of death in him. I will therefore chasten him, and let him go loose."

Luke 23:23 (show verse)

And they cried with loud voice, and required that he might be crucified. And the voice of them and of the high priests prevailed.

And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required,

Luke 23:25 (show verse)

and let loose unto them, him that for insurrection, and murder, was cast into prison, whom they desired: and delivered Jesus to do with him what they would.

And as they led him away, they caught one Simon of Cyrene, coming out of the field: And on him laid they the cross to bear it after Jesus.

Luke 23:27 (show verse)

And there followed him a great company of people, and of women: which women bewailed, and lamented him.

Luke 23:28 (show verse)

But Jesus turned back unto them, and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me: but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

Luke 23:29 (show verse)

For behold, the days will come, when men shall say, 'Happy are the barren and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.'

Luke 23:30 (show verse)

Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us.'

Luke 23:31 (show verse)

For if they do this to a green tree: what shall be done to the dry?"

Luke 23:32 (show verse)

And there were two evildoers led with him to be slain.

Luke 23:33 (show verse)

And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified him: and the evildoers, one on right hand, and the other on the left.

Luke 23:34 (show verse)

Then said Jesus, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do." And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Luke 23:35 (show verse)

And the people stood and beheld. And the rulers mocked him with them, saying, "He helped other men, let him help himself if he be Christ, the chosen of God."

Luke 23:36 (show verse)

The soldiers also mocked him, and came and gave him vinegar,

Luke 23:37 (show verse)

and said, "If thou be that King of the Jews, save thyself."

Luke 23:38 (show verse)

And his superscription was written over him, in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew letters: "This is the King of the Jews."

Luke 23:39 (show verse)

And one of the evildoers which hanged, railed on him, saying, "If thou be Christ, save thyself and us."

Luke 23:40 (show verse)

The others answered and rebuked him, saying, "Neither fearest thou God because thou art in the same damnation?

Luke 23:41 (show verse)

We are righteously punished, for we receive according to our deeds: But this man hath done no thing amiss."

Luke 23:42 (show verse)

And he said unto Jesus, "Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom."

Luke 23:43 (show verse)

And Jesus said unto him, "Verily I say unto thee, today shalt thou be with me in paradise."

And it was about the sixth hour. And there came a darkness over all the land, until the ninth hour,

and the sun was darkened. And the veil of the temple did rent even through the midst.

And Jesus cried with a great voice and said, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." And when he thus had said, he gave up the ghost.

When the Centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God saying, "Of a surety this man was perfect."

And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done: smote their breasts, and returned home.

And all his acquaintance, and the women, that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off beholding these things.

And behold, there was a man named Joseph, a councilor: and was a good man and a just;

Luke 23:51 (show verse)

and did not consent to the counsel and deed of them; which was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews. Which same also, waited for the kingdom of God.

He went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

Luke 23:53 (show verse)

And took it down, and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid it in a hewn tomb, wherein was never man before laid.

Luke 23:54 (show verse)

And that day was the Sabbath even; And the Sabbath drew on.

Luke 23:55 (show verse)

The women that followed after, which came with him from Galilee, beheld the sepulchre and how his body was laid.

Luke 23:56 (show verse)

And they returned, and prepared odours, and ointments; but rested the Sabbath day, according to the commandment.
