THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then were two thieves crucified with him, one on the right-hand and one on the left. And even the robbers that were crucified with him, cast the same reproach upon him. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the earth, unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama-sabachthani? That is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Some of them that stood there hearing it, said, He calleth Elijah. And immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge filled it with vinegar, and put it on a cane, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be: let us see whether Elijah will come to save him. Jesus after he had cried again with a loud voice, dismissed his spirit. And behold the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom, and the earth was shaken and the rocks were torn asunder: And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of holy men that slept were raised. And all his acquaintance, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

Many of the Jews read this inscription; for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests to Pilate, Write not, the king of the Jews; but that he said, I am the king of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written. And the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part, and also his vesture: now the vesture was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore one to another, Let us not rent it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and cast lots for my vesture. These things therefore the soldiers did. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. Jesus therefore seeing his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, saith to his mother, Woman, behold thy son. Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. After this, Jesus knowing, that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar. And filling a sponge with vinegar, and putting it on a stalk of hyssop, they put it to his mouth.
