And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the rebellious to the prudence of the just, to make ready a prepared people for the Lord.

And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

Then his disciples asked him, saying, Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elijah truly shall come first and restore all things. But I say unto you, That Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatever they pleased. Likewise the Son of man shall also suffer of them.

And he answered and told them, Elijah verily shall come first and restore all things and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things and be esteemed as nothing. But I say unto you, That Elijah has indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they wished, as it is written of him.

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah. read more.
And those who were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him and said unto him, Why dost thou baptize then if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?

And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, his brother, and brought them apart up into a high mountain and [he] was transfigured before them, and his face shined as the sun, and his raiment was as white as the light. And, behold, Moses and Elijah appeared unto them talking with him. read more.
Then Peter answered and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to remain here; if thou desire, let us make three tabernacles here: one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elijah. While he yet spoke, behold, a cloud of light overshadowed them, and, behold, a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and feared greatly. Then Jesus came and touched them and said, Arise and be not afraid. And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus only. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no one until the Son of man is risen from the dead. Then the disciples understood that he spoke unto them of John the Baptist.

And six days afterwards Jesus took Peter and James and John, and separated them apart by themselves unto a high mountain; and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow, so as no fuller on earth can white them. And there appeared unto them Elijah with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. read more.
Then Peter answering, said unto Jesus, Master, it shall be good for us to remain here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for thee, and another for Moses, and another for Elijah. For he knew not what he was saying, for he was beside himself. And a cloud came that overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear ye him. And suddenly, when they had looked around, they saw no one any more, except Jesus only with themselves. And as they came down from the mountain, he commanded them that they should tell no one what things they had seen until the Son of man was risen from the dead. And they kept the word within themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should be. And they asked him, saying, Why do the scribes say that Elijah must first come? And he answered and told them, Elijah verily shall come first and restore all things and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things and be esteemed as nothing. But I say unto you, That Elijah has indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they wished, as it is written of him.

And it came to pass about eight days after these words, he took Peter and John and James and went up into the mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. And, behold, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elijah, read more.
who appeared in majesty and spoke of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and those that were with him were heavy with sleep, and when they awoke, they saw his glory and the two men that stood with him. And it came to pass as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to remain here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elijah, not knowing what he said. While he was speaking this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they feared as they entered into the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him. And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days any of those things which they had seen.

Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he returned to Galilee;

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus and said unto his slaves, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him. For Herod had laid hold on John and bound him and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. read more.
For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask. And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John the Baptist's head in a platter. And the king was sorry; nevertheless because of the oath and of those who sat with him at the table, he commanded it to be given her. And he sent and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a platter and given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took up the body and buried it and went and told Jesus.

But when Herod heard of it, he said, This is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife, for he had married her. For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. read more.
Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him and would have killed him, but she could not; for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and respected him; and when he heard him, he did many things and heard him gladly. And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his princes and tribunes and to the principal people of Galilee; and when the daughter of Herodias came in and danced and pleased Herod and those that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it unto thee. And he swore unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it unto thee, unto the half of my kingdom. And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. And she came in with haste unto the king and asked, saying, I will that thou give me immediately in a platter the head of John the Baptist. And the king was exceeding sorry, yet for his oath's sake and for the sakes of those who sat with him, he would not reject her. And straightway the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought, and he went and beheaded him in the prison and brought his head in a platter and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

But I say unto you, That Elijah has indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they wished, as it is written of him.

And exhorting many other things he announced the gospel unto the people. Then Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife and for all the evils which Herod had done, added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

There is another that bears witness of me, and I know that the witness which he witnesses of me is true. Ye sent unto John, and he bore witness unto the truth. But I receive not testimony from man, but I say these things that ye might be saved. read more.
He was a burning and a shining light, and ye were willing to rejoice for one hour in his light.

For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not, but the publicans and the harlots believed him, and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward that ye might believe him.

But I say unto you, That Elijah has indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they wished, as it is written of him.

But I say unto you, That Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatever they pleased. Likewise the Son of man shall also suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spoke unto them of John the Baptist.
