Elijah » Antitype of john the baptist
And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the unbelievers to the wisdom of the just men: to make the people ready for the Lord."
And also if ye will receive it, this is Elijah, which should come.
They said, "Some say that thou art John Baptist, some Elijah, some Jeremiah, or one of the prophets."
And his disciples asked of him, saying, "Why then say the scribes, that Elijah must first come?" Jesus answered, and said unto them, "Elijah shall first come, and restore all things. And I say unto you, that Elijah is come already: And they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they lusted. In likewise shall also the son of man suffer of them."
He answered and said unto them, "Elijah verily shall first come and restore all things. Also the son of man, as it is written, shall suffer many things, and shall be set at nought. Moreover, I say unto you, that Elijah is come, and they have done unto him whatsoever pleased them, as it is written of him."
And they asked him, "What then? Art thou Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." Art thou that prophet? And he answered, "No." Then said they unto him, "What art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thy self?" He said, "I am the voice of a crier in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah." read more.
And they which were sent, were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, "Why baptisest thou then, if thou be not Christ, nor Elijah, neither a prophet?"

And after six days Jesus took Peter and James and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain out of the way, and was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his clothes were as white as the light. Then answered Peter, and said to Jesus, "Master here is good being for us. If thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah." While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud shadowed them. And behold, there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is my dear son, in whom I delight; hear him." And when the disciples heard that, they fell on their faces, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said, "Arise and be not afraid." Then lift they up their eyes, and when they looked up, they saw no man, save Jesus only. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, "See that ye tell the vision to no man, till the son of man be risen again from death." And his disciples asked of him, saying, "Why then say the scribes, that Elijah must first come?" Jesus answered, and said unto them, "Elijah shall first come, and restore all things. And his raiment did shine, and was made very white, even as snow: so white as no fuller can make upon the earth. And there appeared unto them Elijah with Moses: and they talked with Jesus. read more.

And it followed about an eight days after those sayings, that he took Peter, James, and John, and went up into a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was changed, and his garment was white and shone. And behold, two men talked with him, and they were Moses and Elijah, read more.

While he thus spake there came a cloud and shadowed them and they feared when they were come under the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud saying, "This is my dear son, hear him." And as soon as the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close: and told no man in those days any of those things, which they had seen.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, and said unto his servants, "This is John the Baptist; he is risen again from death, and therefore are such miracles wrought by him." For John said unto him, "It is not lawful for thee to have her." And when he would have put him to death, he feared the people, because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday was come, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. Wherefore he promised with an oath, that he would give her whatsoever she would ask. And she, being informed of her mother before, said, "Give me here John Baptist's head in a platter." And the King sorrowed: nevertheless for his oath's sake, and for their sakes, which sat also at the table, he commanded it to be given her. And sent and beheaded John in the prison, and his head was brought in a platter, and given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came, and took up his body, and buried it: And went and told Jesus.

And he sware unto her, "Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, even unto the one half of my kingdom." And she went forth and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "John Baptist's head." And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, "I will, that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John Baptist." And the king was sorry. Yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat at supper also, he would not put her beside her purpose. And immediately the king sent the hangman and commanded his head to be brought in. And he went and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a charger and gave it to the maiden, and the maiden gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his body, and put it in a tomb.

And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. Then Herod the Tetrarch; when he was rebuked of him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done; added this above all, and laid John in prison.
